Description jesse 2002-05-10 11:20:02 UTC
Coin is a 3D graphics library with a C++ Application Programming
Interface based on the Open Inventor 2.1 API. Open Inventor, for those
who are not familiar with it, is an OpenGL-based, retain-mode, 3D model
scene-graph rendering and interaction library, which has become the de
facto standard graphics library for 3D visualization and visual
simulation software in the scientific and engineering community.

Comment regarding the existing PR for graphics/inventor:

Coin is based on the Open Inventor 2.1 API and one of its main
design goals is as much compatibility to SGI's Inventor as possible.

Therefore, I am very much in favour of *closing* PR ports/24736
(graphics/inventor). That port was submitted by myself quite some time
ago. It is IMHO a Good Thing(tm) if we just go with the Coin library
instead of SGI's Inventor. It is source code compatible, its
development is much more alive, it has better error checking, and it
feels better. :)
