Description Kimura Fuyuki 2003-03-30 06:50:00 UTC
I believe that it is reasonable to introduce a new category "dns"
which consists of all the ports relating to the Domain Name System,
because:

- DNS is a very fundamental part of the Internet

- The overgrowth of the category net/

- We already have a enough number of DNS-related ports to form a
  category (see below)

net/adns
net/bind8
net/bind9
net/bind9-dlz
net/ddclient
net/ddup
net/dhid
net/dhisd

A port has been missed from the list:

net/ipcheck

Maybe we could also add the WHOIS things, or should we extend the
category to include any other directory services...?
Comment 2 Frerich Raabe 2003-03-31 05:09:26 UTC
This sounds like a really good idea to me. net/ is becoming quite a hog.

Maybe it's time to see if there could be subcategories, so that you
get net/dns, net/im, net/ping. The ports-system itself is modular
enough to get it that way without too much problems.

Thanks. I've also noticed many ports waiting in the queue.

o [2003/02/22] ports/48562 ports-bugs [new port] : net/p5-DNS-Config Perl modules to manipulate DNS stuff
o [2003/02/22] ports/48563 ports-bugs [new port] : net/p5-DNS-Zone Perl modules to manipulate DNS stuff
o [2003/03/03] ports/48872 ports-bugs [NEW PORT] net/posadis, another DNS server implementation
o [2003/03/04] ports/48912 ports-bugs New port: Maintain DNS zones using an LDAP directory

I saw someone proposed the plan but rejected by one of the portmgr, if
my memory is correct...

Seeing there that it already kind-of exists for x11 (x11-wm,
x11-toolkits, x11-servers etc) and that portmgr
does/doesnot/doesnotrightnow something about it (no hard feelings),
I propose to use the names net-dns, net-im, net-p2p.
