xf86config leads one through a number of steps. One is the selection of a monitor. It says: "Now we want to set the specifications of the monitor. The two critical parameters are the vertical refresh rate, which is the rate at which the the whole screen is refreshed, and most importantly the horizontal sync rate, which is the rate at which scanlines are displayed. The valid range for horizontal sync and vertical sync should be documented in the manual of your monitor. If in doubt, check the monitor database /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/Monitors to see if your monitor is there. Press enter to continue, or ctrl-c to abort." But there is no file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/Monitors installed. The directory does exist though.
Responsible Changed From-To: freebsd-ports-bugs->anholt Over to our X11 guru.
All of the default XFree86 configuration tools are poorly maintained and I think we would be better served by finding a replacement than trying to fix them ourselves. Currently I'm taking a stab at porting RedHat's tool, which I haven't actually used but I expect to be pretty good. -- Eric Anholt eta@lclark.edu http://people.freebsd.org/~anholt/ anholt@FreeBSD.org

State Changed From-To: open->closed The Monitors file was removed in XFree86 repository about a year ago since it was deemed outdated for a long time. I've added a patch to both XFree86 and X.Org servers to avoid referring to this, now nonexistant file and notified upstreams (see XFree86 Bugzilla #1498 and freedesktop Bugzilla #1692). Thanks for reporting this!
