As pointed out by Jeremy Chadwick -- the mcrypt PHP module shouldn't be compulsory. This partially reverses a change introduced for the 3.2.5 -> 3.3.0 update. mcrypt is strongly recommended if you're using 'cookie' style authentication, and is required in that case when you're on a 64bit platform, so the option defaults to 'yes'. Otherwise, you can turn it off and reduce the dependencies for the port.
