Description Christopher Hall 2013-10-09 03:40:00 UTC
The misc/ossp-uuid library contains two functions that have the same name
as functions in FreeBSD libc. These are uuid_create and uuid_compare.

When postgresql-contrib (any version) is loaded attempting a

 select uuid_generate_v4();

will crash the postgresql server with a bus error (signal 10).

The reason is that the ossp-uuid module is accessing the uuid_create from libc
and the uuid_make from ossp-uuid so the uuid struct do not match.

Fix: The attached patch solves this by:
1. adding #defines to header to rename the two fuctions
2. adding aliases to library for the renamed functions

After reinstalling misc/ossp-uuid with the changes the postgresqlXX-contrib
can be recompiled and reinstalled and the the uuid module will fuction
correctly, allowing postgresql server to generate uuids.

Patch attached with submission follows:
How-To-Repeat: in psql command line:

  select uuid_generate_v4();

connected server will crash

Note: there is an older outstanding PR on this:

Comment 3 Palle Girgensohn freebsd_committer freebsd_triage 2014-03-18 11:11:01 UTC
Hi,

There are two approaches to this as I see it.

1. modify ossp so it aliases the methods to avoid using the libc ones.

2. use the uuid-freebsd compatible uuid that uses libc instead of ossp.

Since uuid is built in to libc, and the uuid-freebsd is completely
compatible with the ossp variant, I'm adding support in postgresql-contrib
for the uuid-freebsd extension.

Will that be OK with you all?

Palle

 Thanks for looking at this.

Would retain SQL compatibility with Linux.

Good, because one less library to worry about updating.

As this completely compatible so I can use:
  id UUID DEFAULT uuid_generate_v4() PRIMARY KEY
cross platform - great, so change to schema.

However I could not just use extension name "uuid-ossp" in my schema
and expect it to work cross platform:

It will need something like:
IF FreeBSD THEN
  CREATE EXTENSION IF NOT EXISTS "uuid-freebsd";
ELSE
  CREATE EXTENSION IF NOT EXISTS "uuid-ossp";
END IF;

(or maybe I just "sed" the schema SQL prior to DB creation :)

> Will that be OK with you all?

Might it be better to remove the misc/ossp-uuid port completely and not
have uuid-ossp on FreeBSD. I would much rather have an error at
database creation time than having to wonder why PostgreSQL crashes.

Could the error was something like:
  "uuid-ossp does not exist use uuid-freebsd"

I am not sure if simply redirecting would be a good idea though.

My approach will be to also retain the name "uuid-ossp", for just that reason, no need to have an IF FreeBSD statement at all. I.e. use libc, but "lie" by still calling it uuid-ossp.

Even better, that would mean no changes for my schema SQL.

New Revision: 348685
URL: http://svnweb.freebsd.org/changeset/ports/348685
QAT: https://qat.redports.org/buildarchive/r348685/

Log:
  The PostgreSQL Global Development Group has released an update to all supported
  version of the database system, including versions 9.3.4, 9.2.8, 9.1.13,
  9.0.17, and 8.4.21. This minor release fixes a data corruption issue with
  replication and crash recovery in version 9.3, as well as several other minor
  issues in all versions. All users of version 9.3 are urged to update their
  installations at the next possible downtime. Users of older versions should
  update at their convenience.

  The data corruption issue in PostgreSQL 9.3 affects binary replication
  standbys, servers being recovered from point-in-time-recovery backup, and
  standalone servers which recover from a system crash. The bug causes
  unrecoverable index corruption during recovery due to incorrect replay of row
  locking operations. This can then cause query results to be inconsistent
  depending on whether or not an index is used, and eventually lead to primary
  key violations and similar issues. For this reason, users are encouraged to
  replace each of their standby databases with a new base backup after applying
  the update.

  See release notes for more changes.

  A change specific to the FreeBSD port:
  Modify the contrib/uuid-ossp to actually work (not crashing the backend) by
  using the libc implementation of uuid instead of the ossp port. Schemas and
  queries will just work. Based on the work of Andrew Gierth. 9.1+ EXTENSION
  support added by girgen@.

Comment 8 Palle Girgensohn freebsd_committer freebsd_triage 2016-01-13 10:28:36 UTC
Fixed using libc uuid. For older version we are using a patch, and the patch is submitted upstreams for newer versions (9.4+)
Comment 9 Palle Girgensohn freebsd_committer freebsd_triage 2016-01-13 10:31:53 UTC
(In reply to Palle Girgensohn from comment #8)
this was fixed 2014-04-20, BTW, not recently. :)
