After installation of the package pkg-message is shown, stating besides other Initial password for first time use of MySQL is saved in $HOME/.mysql_secret ie. when you want to use "mysql -u root -p" first you should see password in /root/.mysql_secret however this file doesn't exists and root user can log into DB without password. Fresh 11.1 installation, uname -a FreeBSD machine-name 11.1-RELEASE FreeBSD 11.1-RELEASE #0 r321309: Fri Jul 21 02:08:28 UTC 2017 root@releng2.nyi.freebsd.org:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC amd64 mysql56-server-5.6.39
