Description Graham Perrin freebsd_committer freebsd_triage 2022-01-09 12:32:33 UTC
The 25th anniversary badge first graced <https://www.freebsd.org/> on or around 22nd May 2018. I'm a tad squiffy from partying for the past three-and-a-half years.

Please consider removing the badge before I foxtrot myself solo sideways into an early grave with a glass of Champagne.

Thank you.

Whilst still giddy from the long celebration, I might also ask someone at the Foundation to adjust <https://freebsdfoundation.org/national-freebsd-day/>. If I'm not mistaken, "Friday, July 18" last occurred in 2014 and we're invited to celebrate the 28th anniversary. I hope for this year's 29th anniversary party to last at least as long as the 25th. Cheers!

Done; aware.

To the left of the 25th anniversary badge:

"… more than thirty years. …"

If the FreeBSD Project is _less than_ thirty years old, then there should be a link out to put the _greater_ age in context.

Thanks

Top left of the page:

> FreeBSD … A large community has continually developed it
> for more than thirty years. …

As far as I can tell, the word "it":

* refers to             BSD
* does not refer to FreeBSD.

Three points in time:

1978-03-09
    1BSD RELEASE
    Berkeley Software Distribution based off of UNIX
    <https://freebsdfoundation.org/freebsd/timeline/>

2008-12-28
    "… derived from BSD, …"
    <https://web.archive.org/web/20081228134201/http://www.freebsd.org:80/>

2009-01-01
    "… FreeBSD's code base has undergone over thirty years of …"
    <https://web.archive.org/web/20090101062411/http://www.freebsd.org:80/>

… then (I'll not guess when) ambiguity increased,
    eventually the first paragraph at the home page became wrong.

----

Thoughts:

* shorten or remove the paragraph

* make better use of the About page

* do not attempt to cram the historic relationship between BSD and FreeBSD
  into the home page

* link from somewhere (maybe the About page) to the
  Foundation-provided timeline

* beware of ambiguous words such as "it".

    Delete 25th anniversary image from FreeBSD website

    Next year 2023 will be the 30th anniversary. It's a good time
    to remove the 25th anniversary image.

I applied the patch.
I'm gonna close this PR now. Since the webpage it's gonna be improved with a new design. As I said in another PR. I'll ping you Graham when I started the new design.
