The Alpha microprocessor, was originally developed by DEC, introduced |

in 1992. At this time, Alpha was regarded as fastest CPU in the world. |

Compaq, which bought DEC, announced that computers using Alpha would be phased out |

by 2004 in favour of Intel's Itanium. Hewlett-Packard, new owner of |

Compaq announced to support the Alpha series for a few more years but this will be the end of the lifetime. |

Intels IA-64 will be the replacement of this series. |
