Bug 12923

Summary: Installation fails on HP Net Server
Product: Base System Reporter: nchcvt <nchcvt>
Component: miscAssignee: freebsd-bugs (Nobody) <bugs>
Status: Closed FIXED
Severity: Affects Only Me
Priority: Normal
Version: Unspecified
Hardware: Any
OS: Any

Description nchcvt 1999-08-02 14:10:00 UTC
HP NetServer LC
CPU: 486DX/66
SCSI: AIC7770 (on-board)
HD: Connor 1.3GB (da0)
CD:Goldstar (SCSI)

During the failed installation attempts I've observed the following:

1. The transfer rate from the CD is quite slow: 1-2 kbs.
2. The message for the first 102 chunks states the destination
directory as `/' not `/usr' as I would expect for the binaries
3. Several packages "cannot be read from cd0"
4. As expected, the system fails to boot after starting to load.

Things I done based on the FAQ and other documentation:
1. Set `eisa 12' so that the probe works
2. Disabled >1GB translation in BIOS
3. Adjusted the geometry of the hard drive so it agrees with the
BIOS (Phoenix) (1023/64/32).
4. Allocated the entire disk: non-dangerously, standard MBR

In addition, I've verified that all the hardware works by installing
Linux (RH5.1) with no difficulties.

How-To-Repeat: Try to install

Have you tried installing a newer release of FreeBSD on this machine?
