Here's the dmesg for my Kingston KNE100TX card which is DEC 21143 based:

de0: can't read ENET ROM (why=-4) (462601000000000000000000000000006b00040100c0f03b883e00100000008
de0: 21143 [10-100Mb/s] pass 4.1
de0: address unknown

There are quite a few msgs in dejanews' archive dating back to 1997 regarding the same issue.

Fix: 

Sorry, i'm not a C programmer. I've looked at pci/if_de.c, but feel fairly lost. :-/
