Description Dirk Rodemer 2009-02-07 01:00:18 UTC
I installed FreeBSD 7.1 amd64 on a new MSI 7302 (K9A2VM-F V2) mainboard with a AMD 64 X2 (4850e). When booting only sata devices are detected. PATA devices are not detected (harddisks, cdroms), the controller is detected as atapci1: <ATI IXP700 UDMA133 controller>, ata0: <ATA channel 0> on atapci1.
Also cool & quiet is not working correctly: device_attach: powernow0 attach returned 6.
This could be caused by incorrect ACPI informations. Throttling of the CPU seems to work, but the cpu-fan is running always on full speed. syctl shows no thermal informations.

A verbose log of the boot process is attached.

Please let me know if you need further information.

Fix: None known.

Patch attached with submission follows:
How-To-Repeat: Always repeatable by booting.

To submitter: firstly, could you please ensure that you are running
the most recent available version of the BIOS for your motherboard?
The "bad write" errors would also be seen under Windows XP and Vista.

Secondly, could you drop to the loader prompt, and give the following
commands:

set debug.acpi.block_bad_io=1
boot

and see if that changes anything?

Third, do you know if these issues have always existed, or if they used
to work with a previous FreeBSD version? Is it possible for you to
also boot an 8.0 CD and see if the same issues exist?

ATA part of PR is probably fixed and merged to 7-STABLE on 2009-09-29.

What's the status of these problems for you?
Considering the followup of mav@ on the ATA issue.
