If the Kerberos package is not installed, it is immposible to set passwords.
using the passwd command results in :
/usr/libexec/ld-elf.so.1: Shared object "libkadm.so.3" not found

Fix: 

workaround: install Kerberos.
How-To-Repeat: run " passwd "

This was a transient error for what was the ftp distribution and, for a 
shorter time, the ISO image on ftp.freebsd.org. This was corrected 
for all existing FreeBSD distributions (and the ISO images that will 
be used for CD releases) 9 hours later.
