Description aiza 2010-03-07 01:30:00 UTC
Section 27.3 Using Kernel PPP and section 27.7 Using SLIP are obsolete.

Kernel PPP was rewritten and became User PPP back in release 2.1 I believe. It has only be carried forward for backward computability. Remove this section or at least add statement at beginning of section saying this function is obsolete and has been replaced with User PP which is the preferred method to use.

Slip was never embraced by the ISP community from the very start. In todays world where cable and dsl access is the norm dial up access is hard to find and slip access is not offered at all. Remove this section or at least add statement at beginning of section saying this function is obsolete.

See pr

The kernel SLIP and PPP drivers and associated utilities were removed from
the base system in April 2009 in r190751.

So now no reason to keep those 2 sections in the handbook.

That chapter has been updated to match 8.X but I kept old parts which
are still valid for 7.X (The Handbook covers both FreeBSD 7.X and 8.X).

Time to revisit this PR.
7.x is now obsolete and no longer cause to keep obsolete sections from
handbook.
