Bug 147892

Summary: freebsd.org website switch to mobile mode for webkit browser rekonq
Product: Documentation Reporter: Christof <christof.schulze>
Component: Books & ArticlesAssignee: Johann Kois <jkois>
Status: Closed FIXED
Severity: Affects Only Me
Priority: Normal
Version: Latest
Hardware: Any
OS: Any

Description Christof 2010-06-15 23:00:02 UTC
Whenever I open freebsd.org using rekonq with the following user agent string: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; BSD Four; de-DE) AppleWebKit/532.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) rekonq Safari/532.4
then the website seems to switch to a mobile mode with the navigation on top - optimized for small displays.

I hacked rekonq to send a different user agent string and freebsd.org is then displayed correctly. This is using "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Konqueror/4.0; Linux) KHTML/4.0.5 (like Gecko" as identification.

This behavior leads me to assume that it is a bug in the website triggered by the above user agent string.

Fix:

fix the website/webserver. I have a patch for rekonq to enable testing, however since it is not directly relevant I am not attaching it here.
How-To-Repeat: install rekonq 0.4.0 or previously and open freebsd.org

Well, I just installed rekonq 0.5.0 over the ports. And I managed to
display the FreeBSD.org website the same way as all other browsers (so
in the correct way).

But for this I had to deactivate JavaScript support in the Webkit
preferences. A problem in the webkit/JavasScript implemention in
rekonq? Which is still somewhere between alpha and beta stage at the
moment, by the way.

So for the moment I do not see the need to change anything regarding the
website. If there is a stable version some day and the problem is
indeed related to our website (which I think is not the case), then we
can re-evaluate this.

But for the moment I will close this PR.
