The guide in question:
http://people.freebsd.org/~murray/handbook/config-network-setup.html

"If you own a common card, most of the time you will not have to look very hard for a driver. Drivers for common network cards are present in the GENERIC kernel, so your card should show up during boot, like so: (...)"
Maybe it's just me, but during boot I get like 100 KB of text moving far too quickly to read. Pointing to a boot log would be better.

^^^^^
You are looking at an older version of the handbook which has the
copyright year 2004 and covers FreeBSD 4.10-RELEASE and FreeBSD
5.2.1-RELEASE which is hosted on one of our project developer's
homepage. You might want to compare it with the current version of the
handbook which can be found here (just use the direct link on
FreeBSD.org on the documentation link):

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/

Oh my... a search engine made me do it.

Thanks for the correction, but my comment is relevant to the current
guide too.
