State Changed From-To: open->feedback To submitter: COuld you also please provide the dmesg and "sysctl dev.cpu.0" output from 8.2? Responsible Changed From-To: freebsd-amd64->gavin Track I've found the dmesg output in a daily mail.
I've diffed old and new version and all I see is this:
+xhci0: <XHCI (generic) USB 3.0 controller> mem 0xfe9f8000-0xfe9fffff irq 18 at
device 0.0 on pci1
+xhci0: 32 byte context size.
+usbus0 on xhci0
ahci_load was YES all the time, but:
-acd0: DVDROM <LG DVD-ROM DRD-8160B/1.01> at ata0-master UDMA33
+cd0 at ata0 bus 0 scbus4 target 0 lun 0

+ada5: 476940MB (976773168 512 byte sectors: 16H 63S/T 16383C)
+ada5: Previously was known as ad13
I've added coretemp_load=YES in the meantime:
+coretemp0: <CPU On-Die Thermal Sensors> on cpu0
+est0: <Enhanced SpeedStep Frequency Control> on cpu0
est: CPU supports Enhanced Speedstep, but is not recognized.
est: cpu_vendor GenuineIntel, msr 6160f2506000925

+p4tcc0: <CPU Frequency Thermal Control> on cpu0
+coretemp1: <CPU On-Die Thermal Sensors> on cpu1
+est1: <Enhanced SpeedStep Frequency Control> on cpu1

+device_attach: est1 attach returned 6
+p4tcc1: <CPU Frequency Thermal Control> on cpu1
dev.cpu.0.freq was present. I have a munin graph showing me a working
powerd (min 373.90, avg 2253.07, max 2999.00)
If you want, I can try to boot 8.2 from DVD and check sysctl
dev.cpu.0.
Here's the full dmesg output:

Oh, BTW, the bug is gone, I no longer have to type "zfs:zroot" here,
even when it says "Trying to mount root from zfs:zroot" and
vfs.root.mountfrom=zfs:zroot.
I have no longer access to the system, so I can no longer help to debug the problem. I remember there was a BIOS option which was called "Intel SpeedStep" or something like that. It was grey (not changeable) and "Disabled". Maybe FreeBSD 8 ignored this setting and FreeBSD 9 did not. I have same problem on my test machine. But it has P4 1.8Ghz CPU. # service powerd start sysctl: dev.cpu.0.freq: Device not configured Starting powerd. # sysctl -a | grep dev.cpu.0 dev.cpu.0.%desc: ACPI CPU dev.cpu.0.%driver: cpu dev.cpu.0.%location: handle=\_PR_.CPU1 dev.cpu.0.%pnpinfo: _HID=none _UID=0 dev.cpu.0.%parent: acpi0 dev.cpu.0.freq_levels: 2660/-1 2327/-1 1995/-1 1662/-1 1330/-1 997/-1 665/-1 332/-1 dev.cpu.0.cx_supported: C1/0 dev.cpu.0.cx_lowest: C1 dev.cpu.0.cx_usage: 100.00% last 7530us It was fine on 8.2 I can install 8.2 and some help.
