After upgrading the ports collection with:

portsnap fetch
portsnap extract
portsnap update
pkgdb -F
postdb -Uu
portupgrade -a

I attempted to build the x11-fonts ports by:

make deinstall (this was required during my first make attempt)
make install clean

and ended up with:

===> Verifying install for fontconfig.1 in /usr/ports/x11-fonts/fontconfig
===> Returning to build of cantarell-fonts-0.0.6
Error: shared library "fontconfig.1" does not exist
*** Error code 1

Stop in /usr/ports/x11-fonts/cantarell-fonts.
*** Error code 1
