Bug 17584

Summary: fatal SCSI error with a Symbios 53c875 controller on 4.0R install
Product: Base System Reporter: tr <tr>

Description tr 2000-03-24 19:00:01 UTC
when attempting to do a new 4.0R install on my system, after I receive the message
"waiting 15 seconds for SCSI devices to settle", I get the error message:

sym0: PCI STATUS = 0x8100 (noperiph:sym0:0:-1:-1): SCSI BUS reset
detected. sym0:0: ERROR (40:0) (e-ae-0) (0/5) @ (script 88:1e000000).
sym0: script cmd = 82030000
sym0: regdump: da 10 80 05 47 00 00 0e 00 0e 00 ae 80 00 blah, blah ...

This error message dumps to the screen in a continuous stream, and never stops.
Obviously, the install does not proceed. The machine works fine with the 3.2, 3.3, and
3.4 installs, and is currently running 3.4R. The hardware includes:

K6 266
FIC PA2007 motherboard
64M SDRAM
Diamond Fireport 40 (Symbios 53c875)
Quantum Atlas III 4.5 UW

I am trying to do an ftp install.

How-To-Repeat: just attempt to do a 4.0R install

I am getting the same thing on a Asus K7V-board with an Athlon 700.
The text seems to be the same, but I don't know for sure, as the
text is scrolling very quickly. I have a Symbios 53C810a-controller
to which is attached my CDROM. This is very bad, for I cannot install
FreeBSD! Is there any help known?
Under Linux I had the same problem with the sym53c8xx driver and I had
to replace it by the older ncr-driver.

hai,

we just wanted to upgrade our as20 from true64:) to freeBSD4.4
i'm getting a very similar error when booting the install-iso.
sym1 reports this scsii bus reset on and on ...

  in hardware.txt i could read:

 >> Don't try to use Symbios-chip based SCSI adapters in the PCI slots
connected to hose 1. There is a not-yet-found FreeBSD bug that prevents
this from working correctly. DS20 ships by default with a Symbios on hose
1 so you have to move this card before you can install/boot FreeBSD on it.
 <<

we then moved the card from pci1slot0 (hose1) to pci0slot2 (hose0) and
   pci0slot0 (hose0) ... without success.

has anybody found a solution for this problem?

gruessen,

Is this still a problem with modern versions of FreeBSD?
