I wanted to install 4.0 off of ftp.  When I boot off of the kern.flp floppy,
I keep getting an error:

0x4 (lba=0x38)

What does this mean?

It means you have a bad floppy or the image you transfered got damaged. 

Use binary mode to transfer and try a different floppy.
