Building this port manually in a slightly non-standard way I ran
into problems with threading support, and anyway keeping a port
like this light (as an option) seems like a good idea, so I added
a THREADS knob that served me well.

Any thoughts on this simple patch (that allows to disable threads
again and does not change default behavior)?
