Bug 20866

Summary: On new installation packages depending on Compat22 do not install
Product: Base System Reporter: stork <stork>
Component: miscAssignee: freebsd-bugs (Nobody) <bugs>
Status: Closed FIXED
Severity: Affects Only Me
Priority: Normal
Version: Unspecified
Hardware: Any
OS: Any

Description stork 2000-08-26 19:00:01 UTC
On a new installation following the defaults, packages requiring a.out fail to install.

Fix:

After Compat22 is installed and before any package requiring a.out is installed, shut down and reboot.
How-To-Repeat: Do a new installation following the defaults and try installing KDE.

Could you describe what actually happens? You sau that packages
requiring a.out fail to install. It would be helpful to know
exactly what text you see.

This isn't a known issue described in the release notes for
4.0-RELEASE. I do know, however, that I had problems when
I did not install the compat22 distribution.

Can you not send exact text messages? Without them, this is difficult
to diagnose.

Also, there's not much inclination to diagnose your claims, because I
know that I managed to set up my wife's 4.0-RELEASE workstation with KDE
without any such problem.

Ciao,
Sheldon.

Thanks, but what we really need now is concrete stuff. Both your input
and the originator's input have been pretty vague. Since some of us
have managed to get this working without a problem, what we need now is
to be shown exactly how to make it "not work". :-)

Ciao,
Sheldon.

I think this is the same problem I reported in conf/19509 which has a more
detailed repeat-by.

I think so too. I don't remember installing netscape in the beginning,
or maybe I installed the linux-netscape, which obviously doesn't need
aout support.

This additional detail helps a lot. Now we need to check whether the
problem persists in 4.1-RELEASE. :-)

Paul, I'm going to close this PR as a duplicate of conf/19509, now that
we know exactly what the problem is.

Ciao,
Sheldon.
