The error message that pops up when logged in as 'root' is
mail popper[327]:(V2.53) Unable to get canonical name of client, err=0

when trying to connect to this mail server from another machine (through Outlook) it says that it is not able to connect to the mail server

This is a problem of your network setup, probably.
