If somebody decides to do anything about this - is there a reason that
the patch in the base system is still at 2.1? Yes, I know there is
a 2.5 port, and I'm using it, and it fixes a lot of weirdness with 2.1,
e.g. in dealing with newly created/removed files.

G'luck,
Peter

please (read sorry), forget this PR #23365 (read close).
I made a new one which fixe all Makefiles this way in src/gnu.
