Description Dimitry Andric freebsd_committer freebsd_triage 2019-02-26 18:56:16 UTC
I am importing llvm, clang, compiler-rt, libc++, ldd and lldb 8.0.0 into the projects/clang800-import branch.

As of 2019-02-25, this branch contains the equivalent of upstream's 8.0.0 rc2, and it has been synchronized with head r344548.

Please perform an exp-run against this branch.

[for convenience, bug 230355 was the previous clang 7.0.0 exp-run]
Comment 1 Dimitry Andric freebsd_committer freebsd_triage 2019-02-26 18:57:55 UTC
Note that the fix from bug 236061 ("devel/json-cpp: Fix build with libc++ 8.0") should also be applied to the ports tree, as otherwise CMake and a whole bunch of other dependencies will not be built.

There might be more such fallout, which is due to the new standard C++ <version> header.

Comment 3 Jan Beich freebsd_committer freebsd_triage 2019-03-04 17:15:13 UTC
Can you expedite landing in order to MFC to /stable/11 and /stable/12 *before* the slush?

-Werror bustage with few if any blocked ports can be safely ignored for the maintainers are often at fault for keeping the flag by default. In many cases -Werror is used together with -Wall, -Wextra, -Weverything, etc. which practically asks for bustage on compiler upgrade.

Once FreeBSD 12.0 reaches EOL I'd like to start lifting LLD_UNSAFE. LLD 8 would help with that e.g., bug 233740 comment 10.

If C++20 is released during FreeBSD 11.3/12.1 lifetime ports may have growing pains because libc++ cannot be easily replaced. And USES=compiler better remain nop to avoid exp-run churn.

Sure, I'm fine with that. I requested this exp-run specifically to ensure that there are no major problems with ports. And indeed, the number of failures seems to be quite low, and most are easy to fix (if a bit cumbersome).

Yup, let's suppress those warnings, unless they are trivial to fix.

The C++20 support in libc++ 8.0 is obviously not 100% finished either, but it's pretty OK for at least some time.

Thanks for all of those PRs (and changes) jbeich.

I agree I'd prefer to see this merged sooner rather than later - in general as long as new fail+skipped is on the order of a percent or so of the ports tree I think we're better served by merging changes like this and then addressing the fallout.

One other comment, do we have a good way to get these changes (or at least reports) to the upstream project communities?

Bug 236192 is full of hacks. Before upstreaming more people need to dogfood libc++ 8. Proper fixes are likely to be invasive e.g., "version" file used in many places, sloppy <...> vs. "..." usage and stalled (inactive upstream).

However, even with easy -Werror fixes upstreaming is a time-consuming process as it requires engaging in whatever flavor of the day bugtracker, workflow, codestyle, contributor agreement, etc. they use. Port maintainers are better positioned to accomplish that than random ports/ committers which may quickly burn out. For one, I'm already busy preparing for Boost 1.70 (bug 235956) and ICU 64 to care about upstreaming for ports that I don't even use.

Indeed, I don't mean to imply I think or wish you should take on the task of upstreaming "proper" fixes for Clang/libc++ 8. Maintainers are in the best position to act as the liaison between the FreeBSD project (and our tool chain) and upstream, but I don't know that we do a good job of advocating for that today.

Exp-run is still not complete on i386, there are regressions there.

c++ hangs here, 115 ports skipped:

New revision: 345073
URL: https://svnweb.freebsd.org/changeset/base/345073

Log:
  Revert r308867 (which was originally committed in the clang390-import
  project branch):

    Work around LLVM PR30879, which is about a bad interaction between
    X86 Call Frame Optimization on i386 and libunwind, by disallowing the
    optimization for i386-freebsd12.

    This should fix some instances of broken exception handling when
    frame pointers are omitted, in particular some unittests run during
    the build of editors/libreoffice.

    This hack will be removed as soon as upstream has implemented a more
    permanent fix for this problem.

  And indeed, after r345018 and r345019, which updated LLVM libunwind to
  the most recent version, the above workaround is no longer needed. The
  upstream commit which fixed this is:

    https://llvm.org/viewvc/llvm-project?view=revision&revision=292723

  Specifically, 32 bit (i386-freebsd) executables optimized with omitted
  frame pointers and Call Frame Optimization should now behave correctly
  when a C++ exception is thrown, and the stack is unwound.

Log:
  Pull in r352826 from upstream lld trunk (by Fangrui Song):

    [ELF] Support --{,no-}allow-shlib-undefined

    Summary:
    In ld.bfd/gold, --no-allow-shlib-undefined is the default when
    linking an executable. This patch implements a check to error on
    undefined symbols in a shared object, if all of its DT_NEEDED entries
    are seen.

    Our approach resembles the one used in gold, achieves a good balance
    to be useful but not too smart (ld.bfd traces all DSOs and emulates
    the behavior of a dynamic linker to catch more cases).

    The error is issued based on the symbol table, different from
    undefined reference errors issued for relocations. It is most
    effective when there are DSOs that were not linked with -z defs (e.g.
    when static sanitizers runtime is used).

    gold has a comment that some system libraries on GNU/Linux may have
    spurious undefined references and thus system libraries should be
    excluded (https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=6811). The
    story may have changed now but we make --allow-shlib-undefined the
    default for now. Its interaction with -shared can be discussed in the
    future.

  Pull in r352943 from upstream lld trunk (by Fangrui Song):

    [ELF] Default to --no-allow-shlib-undefined for executables

    Summary:
    This follows the ld.bfd/gold behavior.

    The error check is useful as it captures a common type of ld.so
    undefined symbol errors as link-time errors:

        // a.cc => a.so (not linked with -z defs)
        void f(); // f is undefined
        void g() { f(); }

        // b.cc => executable with a DT_NEEDED entry on a.so
        void g();
        int main() { g(); }

        // ld.so errors when g() is executed (lazy binding) or when the program is started (-z now)
        // symbol lookup error: ... undefined symbol: f

  Together, these add support for --no-allow-shlib-undefined, and make it
  the default for executables, so they will fail to link if any symbols
  from needed shared libraries are undefined.

Yes, this is due to base r345349, for bug 236141. Maybe jbeich has some good ideas? :)

Log:
  Pull in r356809 from upstream llvm trunk (by Eli Friedman):

    [ARM] Don't form "ands" when it isn't scheduled correctly.

    In r322972/r323136, the iteration here was changed to catch cases at
    the beginning of a basic block... but we accidentally deleted an
    important safety check. Restore that check to the way it was.

    Fixes https://bugs.llvm.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41116

    Differential Revision: https://reviews.llvm.org/D59680

  This should fix "Assertion failed: (LiveCPSR && "CPSR liveness tracking
  is wrong!"), function UpdateCPSRUse" errors when building the devel/xwpe
  port for armv7.

Log:
  After r346168, also merge build infrastructure for LLVM libomp.

  MFC r345235:

  Add lib/libomp, with a Makefile, and generated configuration headers.
  Not connected to the main build yet, as there is still the issue of the
  GNU omp.h header conflicting with the LLVM one. (That is, if MK_GCC is
  enabled.)

  PR:		236062

  MFC r345236:

  Connect lib/libomp to the build.

  * Set MK_OPENMP to yes by default only on amd64, for now.
  * Bump __FreeBSD_version to signal this addition.
  * Ensure gcc's conflicting omp.h is not installed if MK_OPENMP is yes.
  * Update OptionalObsoleteFiles.inc to cope with the conflicting omp.h.
  * Regenerate src.conf(5) with new WITH/WITHOUT fragments.

  Relnotes:	yes
  PR:		236062

  MFC r345242:

  Explicitly link libomp.so against -lpthread, as it depends on pthread
  functionality. This should make example OpenMP programs work out of the
  box.

  Reported by:	jbeich
  PR:		236062, 236581

  MFC r345278:

  Also explicitly link libomp.so against -lm, as it transitively depends
  on scalbn and a few other math functions, via libcompiler-rt. This
  should allow OpenMP programs to link with BFD linkers too.

  Reported by:	jbeich
  PR:		236062, 236581

  MFC r345282:

  Remove --as-needed from the linker flags for libomp.so, as these
  actually prevent the transitive dependency on libm.

  Reported by:	jbeich
  PR:		236062, 236581

  MFC r345291:

  Turn on MK_OPENMP for i386 by default, now that it can build.

  * Regenerate src.conf(5) with new WITH/WITHOUT fragments.

  MFC r345242:

  functionality. This should make example OpenMP programs work out of the
  box.

Can you also MFC base r337156 (libc++fs) and maybe base r318594 (libc++experimental) to /stable/11 and /stable/12? std::filesystem is part of C++17 but /stable/11 doesn't even have libc++experimental atm.

Example consumer:

Nevermind comment 45. I didn't notice base r344213.

  ASAN reports become a lot more useful with llvm-symbolizer in $PATH, and the
