As appears for example in enlightenment (I sent a seperate bug-report for that)
an application will hang up if the function XF86VidModeGetAllModeLines
is called under XFree 3.3.6 for alpha

maybe wait for XFree 4...
How-To-Repeat: start enlightenment as compiled by the ports
