I have an external USB disk that works perfectly when connected to a running system, but becomes inaccessible (no /dev nodes) after rebooting while it is connected.  Disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable makes it work again.

Here is the dmesg output, which ends in some USB error messages that are probably related.  The messages from "ugen0.3: <Seagate Basic> at usbus0" to "umass0: detached" are then repeated every 20 seconds until the cable is disconnected.

Can you check if this is still happening on 12.2?

Yes, it fails with the same CAM status 0x44 when booting from the 12.2-RELEASE live CD.
