Comment 1 Yuri Victorovich freebsd_committer freebsd_triage 2020-10-29 00:20:16 UTC
binutils-2.33.1_3,1 (devel/binutils) doesn't crash on it, but also doesn't demangle it (https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=26803).
Comment 2 Dimitry Andric freebsd_committer freebsd_triage 2020-10-29 19:33:09 UTC
Yuri, in the binutils bug report you mentioned that the raw symbol was truncated.

Does the elftoolchain c++filt work correctly with the non-truncated symbol, or does it also assert?

That said, it would be nicer if both the binutils and elftoolchain demangling tools showed an error message "your symbol is invalid, because xxxx" instead. :)
Comment 3 Yuri Victorovich freebsd_committer freebsd_triage 2020-10-29 19:45:53 UTC
(In reply to Dimitry Andric from comment #2)

Dimitry,

c++filt from the base also asserts on the complete symbol, but c++filt from binutils-2.35.1,1 decodes it fine.

When a C++ code has any lambda functions in it, compiler generates such symbols with dollar signs in them. This is one such symbol.

I think binutils in the base is just too old.

Yuri
Comment 4 Dimitry Andric freebsd_committer freebsd_triage 2020-10-29 19:55:12 UTC
(In reply to Yuri Victorovich from comment #3)
It's no longer binutils, but contrib/elftoolchain, which is also used for e.g. libelf, and tools like objcopy, etc.

Can you paste the full symbol here for reference? I think this might be good for an upstream bug report for elftoolchain.

(In reply to Dimitry Andric from comment #4)

This code:
> void func1() {
>         auto func2 = []() {
>         };
>         func2();
> }

creates the symbol _ZZ5func1vENK3\$_0clEv that c++filt from the bases asserts on:
> $ c++filt "_ZZ5func1vENK3\$_0clEv"
> Assertion failed: (ddata->output.size > 0), function cpp_demangle_read_sname, file /usr/src/contrib/elftoolchain/libelftc/libelftc_dem_gnu3.c, line 2138.
> Abort trap

but c++filt from binutils-2.35.1,1 decodes fine:
> $ /usr/local/bin/c++filt "_ZZ5func1vENK3\$_0clEv"
> func1()::$_0::operator()() const

See ELF Tool Chain ticket #539 demangler does not demangle lambdas

Comment 7 Dimitry Andric freebsd_committer freebsd_triage 2020-11-01 12:29:25 UTC
It's pretty interesting, when I use this simple little demangle.cpp program:

#include <cxxabi.h>
#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>

static char *demangle_buf;
static size_t demangle_size = 2 * 1024;

static void demangle(const char *mangled_name)
{
  int status;
  char *demangled_name = abi::__cxa_demangle(mangled_name, demangle_buf, &demangle_size, &status);
  switch (status) {
  case 0:
    printf("%s -> %s\n", mangled_name, demangled_name);
    break;
  case -1:
    printf("error: memory allocation failure while demangling %s\n", mangled_name);
    break;
  case -2:
    printf("error: %s is not a valid C++ mangled name\n", mangled_name);
    break;
  case -3:
    printf("error: invalid argument(s) while demangling %s\n", mangled_name);
    break;
  default:
    printf("error: unknown status %d while demangling %s\n", status, mangled_name);
    break;
  }
}

int main(int argc, char *argv[])
{
  if (argc <= 1) {
    printf("Usage: %s mangled_name ...\n", argv[0]);
    return 1;
  }
  if ((demangle_buf = (char *)malloc(demangle_size)) == NULL) {
    printf("Unable to allocate memory for demangle buffer\n");
    return 1;
  }
  for (int i = 1; i < argc; ++i) {
    demangle(argv[i]);
  }
  free(demangle_buf);
  return 0;
}

it works just fine on the identifier:

% ./demangle '_ZZ5func1vENK3$_0clEv'
_ZZ5func1vENK3$_0clEv -> func1(void)::$_0::operator()(void) const

However, it uses the *older* copy of elftoolchain's libelftc_dem_gnu3.c in contrib/libcxxrt!

E.g. something has been broken in this area in more recent releases of elftoolchain...
Comment 8 Dimitry Andric freebsd_committer freebsd_triage 2020-11-01 16:25:30 UTC
The simple case, e.g. '_ZZ5func1vENK3$_0clEv' has regressed with https://sourceforge.net/p/elftoolchain/code/3531/ ("libelftc: revamped demangler support for function return type"), aka https://github.com/elftoolchain/elftoolchain/commit/68c2224b7 .

The https://sourceforge.net/p/elftoolchain/tickets/539/ has another example however, '_ZZN9libunwind17LocalAddressSpace18findUnwindSectionsEjRNS_18UnwindInfoSectionsEENUlP12dl_phdr_infojPvE_8__invokeES4_jS5_', which GNU c++filt unpacks to 'libunwind::LocalAddressSpace::findUnwindSections(unsigned int, libunwind::UnwindInfoSections&)::{lambda(dl_phdr_info*, unsigned int, void*)#1}::__invoke(dl_phdr_info*, unsigned int, void*)'.

With the elftc demangler, before upstream r3531, it simply returns "not a valid mangled name", while after upstream r3531, it asserts "(ddata->output.size > 0)".

What seems to happen is that r3531 added a cpp_demangle_data::cur_output member, and this is being used for any cpp_demangle_push_str() call. When cpp_demangle_read_sname() reads the '5func1' part of the original string, it calls cpp_demangle_push_str to push the 'func1' name that it decodes, but at that point cur_output is *not* pointing to ddata->output, which the assert expects.
Comment 9 Dimitry Andric freebsd_committer freebsd_triage 2020-11-01 20:20:31 UTC
The assertion failure has also been reported by other people:

https://sourceforge.net/p/elftoolchain/tickets/581/

I have a fix locally for this particular error, which I'm going to submit on that sourceforge ticket.

> I have a fix locally for this particular error, which I'm going to submit on that sourceforge ticket.

Just to make sure: does it only fix the assert, or does it also make c++filt to decode the symbol correctly?
Comment 11 Dimitry Andric freebsd_committer freebsd_triage 2020-11-01 21:48:37 UTC
(In reply to Yuri Victorovich from comment #10)
> Just to make sure: does it only fix the assert, or does it also make c++filt to decode the symbol correctly?

So far I've only been fixing assertions, which there are quite a few of. But unfortunately libelftc's demangler does not seem to implement any of the machinery to handle C++11 features, like unnamed types, lambda's etc. Adding these does not look trivial.
Comment 12 Yuri Victorovich freebsd_committer freebsd_triage 2020-11-01 21:53:11 UTC
Here is another symbol that causes the assertion: _ZZN10half_float6detail15half2float_implEjfNSt3__117integral_constantIbLb1EEEE14exponent_table (from the object file merge-dequantize-operators.cpp.o from the port misc/nn-insight).

This one is not for a lambda function.
Comment 13 Yuri Victorovich freebsd_committer freebsd_triage 2020-11-01 21:57:35 UTC
On this testcase c++filt doesn't assert but doesn't decode the symbol either: _ZNSt3__116__copy_unalignedINS_6vectorIbNS_9allocatorIbEEEELb0EEENS_14__bit_iteratorIT_Lb0EXLi0EEEENS5_IS6_XT0_EXLi0EEEES8_S7_

c++filt from the binutils package does decode it correctly.

Overall c++filt from the base is quite far behind of the c++filt from the binutils package in terms of stability and symbol support.
Comment 14 Dimitry Andric freebsd_committer freebsd_triage 2020-11-02 11:19:19 UTC
(In reply to Yuri Victorovich from comment #13)
Yes, the elftoolchain demangler misses a few more modern features, and its development does not seem very active. (Not necessarily for the other parts of elftoolchain such as libelf, btw.)

That said, with the fixes I've proposed for upstream, only the lambda examples don't demangle correctly, but the rest does. E.g. I now get:

_ZZ5func1vENK3$_0clEv ->
func1()::$_0::operator()() const

_ZZN7WebCore19SVGAnimatedProperty20LookupOrCreateHelperINS_32SVGAnimatedStaticPropertyTearOffIbEEbLb1EE21lookupOrCreateWrapperEPNS_10SVGElementEPKNS_15SVGPropertyInfoERbE19__PRETTY_FUNCTION__ ->
WebCore::SVGAnimatedProperty::LookupOrCreateHelper<WebCore::SVGAnimatedStaticPropertyTearOff<bool>, bool, true>::lookupOrCreateWrapper(WebCore::SVGElement*, WebCore::SVGPropertyInfo const*, bool&)::__PRETTY_FUNCTION__

_ZNSt3__116__copy_unalignedINS_6vectorIbNS_9allocatorIbEEEELb0EEENS_14__bit_iteratorIT_Lb0EXLi0EEEENS5_IS6_XT0_EXLi0EEEES8_S7_ ->
std::__1::__bit_iterator<bool, false, 0> std::__1::__copy_unaligned<std::__1::vector<bool, std::__1::allocator<bool> >, false>(std::__1::__bit_iterator<bool, std::__1::allocator<bool>, 0>, std::__1::__bit_iterator<bool, std::__1::allocator<bool>, 0>, std::__1::__bit_iterator<bool, false, 0>)

_ZZN10half_float6detail15half2float_implEjfNSt3__117integral_constantIbLb1EEEE14exponent_table ->
half_float::detail::half2float_impl(unsigned int, float, std::__1::integral_constant<bool, true>)::exponent_table

So the remaining one is:

_ZZN9libunwind17LocalAddressSpace18findUnwindSectionsEjRNS_18UnwindInfoSectionsEENUlP12dl_phdr_infojPvE_8__invokeES4_jS5_

That said, it might be more future-proof if we import libcxxabi from the llvm project into contrib, and start building that, at least for its demangler support. At some point it might even replace libcxxrt, or serve as a drop-in replacement.

Indeed, I've thought about doing that at least for c++filt even if we don't use it for the C++ runtime. We already have a copy of the libcxxabi demangler being used in lldb.

That said it's still worth fixing as many of the elftc demangler issues as we can.

Log:
  Add WITH_LLVM_CXXFILT option to install llvm-cxxfilt as c++filt

  Since elftoolchain's cxxfilt is rather far behind on features, and we
  ran into several bugs, add an option to use llvm-cxxfilt as an drop-in
  replacement.

  It supports the same options as elftoolchain cxxfilt, though it doesn't
  have support for old ARM (C++ Annotated Reference Manual, not the CPU)
  and GNU v2 manglings. But these are irrelevant in 2020.

  Note: as we already compile the required libraries as part of libllvm,
  this will not add any significant build time either.

The original assertions in elftoolchain cxxfilt have been patched as much as possible, though it still does not support unnamed types or lambdas.

An option has been added to replace c++filt with llvm-cxxfilt, and this option has been turned on by default for -CURRENT. If this causes no trouble, I will MFC all the changes to stable/11 and stable/12.

  libelf: add compression header support

  GNU and Oracle libelf implementations added support for section
  compression, intended to reduce the size of DWARF debug info (which

  There are two compressed ELF section formats:

  1. Old GNU - sections are renmaed to start with 'z'. Section contains
     a magic number, uncompressed size, and compressed data.

  2. Oracle and New GNU - compressed sections use the SHF_COMPRESSED flag.
     The compression header contains the compression type, uncompressed
     size, and uncompressed alignment.

  The second style is preferred and this change implements only that one.

  MFC r348347 (by jhibbits):

  Add missing powerpc64 relocation support to libdwarf

  Summary:
  Due to missing relocation support in libdwarf for powerpc64, handling of dwarf
  info on unlinked objects was bogus.

  Examining raw dwarf data on objects compiled on ppc64 with a modern compiler
  (in-tree gcc tends to hide the issue, since it only rarely generates relocations
  in .debug_info and uses DW_FORM_str instead of DW_FORM_strp for everything), you
  will find that the dwarf data appears corrupt, with repeated references to the
  compiler version where things like types and function names should appear.

  This happens because the 0 offset of .debug_str contains the compiler version,
  and without applying the relocations, *all* indirect strings in .dwarf_info will
  end up pointing to it.

  This corruption then propogates to the CTF data, as ctfconvert relies on
  libdwarf to read the dwarf info, for every compiled object (when building a
  kernel.)

  However, if you examine the dwarf data on a compiled executable, it will appear
  correct, because during final link the relocations get applied and baked in by
  the linker.

  elfcopy/strip: Ensure sections have required alignment on output

  Object files may specify insufficient alignment on certain sections, for
  example due to a bug in NASM[1]. When we detect that case in elfcopy or

  required.

  The NASM bug was fixed in 2015[2], but we might as well have this fixup

  addr2line: Cache CU DIEs upon a successful address lookup.

  Previously, addr2line would sequentially search all CUs for each input
  address. For some uses, notably syzkaller's code coverage map generator,
  this was extremely slow. Add a CU cache into which entries are added
  following a successful lookup, and search the cache before falling back
  to a scan. When translating a large number of addresses this yields
  slightly better performance than GNU addr2line.

  Garbage-collect an unused hash table which appears to have been intended
  for the same purpose. A hash table doesn't seem particularly suitable
  since each CU spans a range of addresses.

  GNU and Oracle libelf implementations added support for section

Log:
  MFC r367323:

  Update libcxxrt's private copy of elftoolchain demangler

  This updates the private copy of libelftc_dem_gnu3.c in libcxxrt with
  the most recent version from upstream r3877. Similar to r367322, this
  fixes a number of possible assertions, and allows it to correctly
  demangle several names that it could not handle before.

  PR:		250702

  MFC r367337:

  Make vector-related functions in libcxxrt's demangler static

  Follow-up to r367323 by re-adding static to a number of the functions
  copied from elftc's libelftc_vstr.c. This was requested by upstream.

  PR:		250702

Log:
  MFC r367304:

  MFC r367712:

  Ensure make delete-old does not unlink the llvm-cxxfilt and its manpage,
  after r367304 and r367324, when WITH_LLVM_CXXFILT is enabled.
