If removed, chase references to it in the FreeBSD Handbook and other documenntation.

IMHO if it is still in the base, it's still good to have that in handbook. We can add a note of the newer and suggested alternatives.

Should I count that as a "counterproductive" survey answer for this item? (Email answer to all welcome in this case - easier for me to keep track of than piecemeal answers.)

I'm not sure what "counterproductive" means here? And is there a survey running currently?

BTW, my main point is, it is nice that the document covers all the things available in the system, if that's less-useful or in the processing of deprecating, we can add some information around the content, or moving to appendix. Even the content is only useful to very few people, it's still worth to keep it, as long as it's already there and correct. Of course it should not effect the readability so we can consider reorg the content.

There's a survey email, visible (if you haven't received it) at https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-announce/2022-April/000029.html and https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-doc/2022-April/001677.html. In that context, I mean "counterproductive" as "would make the whole FreeBSD Handbook less useful to some" (which removing NIS documentation definitely qualifies as if sites/people still use it).

At least one user answered the survey stating they use it, so keeping there. Checking it's still correct will happen as part of bug 263340, so closing this.
