Description Pete Fritchman 2001-04-22 16:40:01 UTC
- update version to 2.9.6
- update MASTER_SITES
- take over MAINTAINERship
- install some documentation into ${PREFIX}/share/doc/joe
- fix up pkg-descr (fmt(1), WWW:, etc)
- remove files/patch-a{a,b,c}
- note: joerc and friends are now installed in ${PREFIX}/etc rather than
  ${PREFIX}/lib
- update patch-ad (the purpose of patch-ad is to add file locking to joe;
  some logistic changes were made to accomodate the newer joe source). I
  am going to see if the joe author(s) will incorporate this (and patch-ae)
  into the main distribution; it seems rather silly the editor has no
  file locking by default.

Fix: Also available at http://hex.databits.net/~petef/diffs/joe.diff

(Remember to remove files/patch-a{a,b,c})

The reason I've been holding off in submitting something like this is
because the author/developer of Joe has *Nothing* to do with these latest
versions of Joe coming out.

Others have taken the last version of joe that he developed, bumped the
version number, made a bunch of changes, and are still caling it the same
joe, with no differentiation that this is a fork of the original package.

If Joe Allen endorses, or even recognizes these as being official, I have no
problem with recommending that the newer versions be brought in. But, I do
have a serious problem with some external group "taking over" a project like
this without at least somehow marking that this is different than the
original project.

As far as I know, nobody has even audited the changes they've made to see
that they aren't introducing (yet another) hole in this editor... I'd like
to hold off a bit, regardless...

What is the latest on this port, I'm going to put it in suspend if its
still waiting on the reasons listed in the audit-trail.

I'd love to have an editors/joe29 port, at least. A lot of my users
like the latest version of joe, so I'd imagine other people do, too.
What are your thoughts on that?
