Bug 27020

Summary: FreeBSD 4.3RC compiled with an SMP kernel fails to boot
Product: Base System Reporter: cfaber <cfaber>
Component: kernAssignee: freebsd-bugs (Nobody) <bugs>
Status: Closed FIXED
Severity: Affects Only Me
Priority: Normal
Version: Unspecified
Hardware: Any
OS: Any

Description cfaber 2001-05-02 05:00:02 UTC
After compiling a GENERIC kernel with SMP options the machine fails to boot, During the first few sets of kernels tried the machine would lock up while attempting to mount root which is on a Compaq Smart Array 221 controller card. After changing the system configuration around the machine locks up while initializing APIC the following message was observed:

Changing APIC ID for IO APIC #0 from 0 to 8 on chip
Programming 35 pins in IOAPIC #0
IOAPIC #0 intpin 2 -> irq0
<locked up>

Fix:

Don't use SMP?
How-To-Repeat: Compile an SMP kernel on a Dual processor Compaq Proliant 800

Does this happen of newer releases? I have been using an SMP kernel for
more than
2 years without any problems, but it might be related to your Compaq
SmartArray 221
controller card.

Try using a newer release, such as FreeBSD 4.4-RELEASE or 4.5-RELEASE.
I didn't
have any problems with 4.5-RELEASE on my test machine which has four
proccessors
on an Intel Server Board.

Regards,

Please confirm whether this is still a problem with 4.5R.
