Bug 28892

Summary: Poor disk performance on version 4.3
Product: Base System Reporter: Guy Baker <guy>
Component: i386Assignee: Søren Schmidt <sos>
Status: Closed FIXED
Severity: Affects Only Me
Priority: Normal
Version: Unspecified
Hardware: Any
OS: Any

Description Guy Baker 2001-07-11 16:50:02 UTC
We are experience extremly slow disk performance.

We have set hw.ata.wc="1" in /boot/loader.conf which has impoved performance but still when extrating a tar archive we are seeing in the region of 3,000 files per minute extracted, when on our other machine which runs 4.0 we are seeing 10,000 to 15,000 files per minute.

The Mother board is Elite D6VAA the disk drives are IBM 5200 spin, ATA66

Help!

Guy

Please send your /var/run/dmesg.boot file, ideally with verbose boot option.

Soren should be interested in this.

This might be explained by softupdates enabled on the fast box and not the slow
box. Untarring large directory trees is where softupdates gives most
performance boost (the 3-5x experienced is not unreasonable). Check the output
of the "mount" command on both systems.

What mount options are the FSes mounted with? Show the output of
mount(8) please.

I assume the other machine has exactly the same hardware specs?

No feedback, and this is considered to be because of WC being off in 4.3.
