Bug 31671

Summary: 4.4 installer hangs at " Mounting root from ufs:/dev/mdoc"
Product: Base System Reporter: Kent Timmerman <kentkt>
Component: i386Assignee: freebsd-doc (Nobody) <doc>
Status: Closed FIXED
Severity: Affects Only Me
Priority: Normal
Version: Unspecified
Hardware: Any
OS: Any

Description Kent Timmerman 2001-10-31 20:10:03 UTC
I have install CDs for versions 3.5.1 through 4.3. All of these versions will complete the kernel configuration and enter sysinstall. When I run 4.4 the kernel configuration hangs at " Mounting root from ufs:/dev/md0c" and will proceed no further. All conflicts are cleared and the hard drive is dangerously dedicated.
Hardware: Abit PX5 with AMD K6-200 processor, Maxtor 71626A hard drive, BCD 24x CDROM, Jaton 1 Meg. video adapter, Magitron monitor, AOpen AON325 NIC.

How-To-Repeat: 4.3 kernel config. runs, 4.4 hangs every time.

I had similar problem on P-233MMX/256RAM/30GB HDD/Spacewalker-HOT569A-Intel430TX
Motherboard/8MB SiS SVGA/
Problem disapeared when I enabled "Assign IRQ for USB" in my AWARD BIOS.

Does the proposed solution work for you? Thanks.

another addition to this issue:

I had an Adaptec 2940 UW SCSI Controller attached to
my system and the 4.4 installer locked up at:

"Waiting 15 seconds for SCSI devices to settle"

After applying the BIOS Setting mentioned in

http://www.FreeBSD.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=31671

the 4.4 installer worked out fine.

It would be nice if you could mention this in your
installation notes (or rework the installer for future
releases), because I spent a huge amount of time in
detaching and replacing my SCSI hardware with ATAPI
hardware to figure out this problem.

I wanted to add that I have an IBM Thinkpad 390X that has this same
problem. Unfortuantely, the IBM BIOS does not have the option to Assign
IRQ to USB, as is mentioned in one of the followups. We're going to try a
4.3-install disk tomorrow to see what the results are.

The situation is resolved, it just needs adding to the documentation.

Throw this back to the doc team at large.

The problem reported will not occur on 5.x releases of FreeBSD and probably
recent 4.x releases as they support PCI interrupt routing which fixes this
hang.
