Bug 45383

Summary: Failed installation FreeBSD 4.7-RELEASE and 4.7-STABLE with disks attached to Mylex AcceleRAID 170
Product: Base System Reporter: Vadim Stanovov <gadothaah>
Component: i386Assignee: freebsd-bugs (Nobody) <bugs>
Status: Closed FIXED
Severity: Affects Only Me
Priority: Normal
Version: 4.7-STABLE
Hardware: Any
OS: Any

Description Vadim Stanovov 2002-11-18 05:40:00 UTC
While installation booting whith 4.7-STABLE (or 4.7-RELEASE)
Mylex AcceleRAID 170 does not detect but second debug screen shows:

DEBUG: Loading module mly.ko (Mylex AcceleRAID/eXtremeRAID)
 mly0: <Mylex AcceleRAID 170> mem 0xe8000000-0xebffffff irq 10 at device 10.0 on pci2
 mly0: Mylex AcceleRAID 170 , 1 channel, firmware 7.01-0-00 (20020418), 64MB RAM

When go to installation menu "Custom - Allocate disk space for FreeBSD"
 shows message:
 -------------
 No disks found!
Please verify that your disk controller is being properly probed at boot time.
 -------------

However installation on this PC 4.6.2-RELEASE or 5.0-CURRENT go just fine.
I have tried use another PC and another Mylex (different BIOS, etc.)
in different combinations - problem persist.
It is workaround for this problem - boot from floppies 4.6.2-RELEASE
and install from CD with 4.7, but it's not guaranteed to work either.

Fix:

Hint for anyone who wants to work on this: I believe that the _devname
table in devices.c needs to be updated to add mly and possibly some
other drivers.

Bruce.

Hi!
It seems that the install.htm for both 4.62 and 4.7 has an error. It
says:
4.3.21. When I install onto a drive managed by a Mylex PCI RAID
controller, the system fails to boot (eg. with a read error
message).

There is a bug in the Mylex driver which results in it ignoring
the ``8GB'' geometry mode setting in the BIOS. Use the 2GB mode
instead.

Actually, when using 2GB geometry, the install gives a "no disks found"
error. Using 8GB geometry, install for 4.62 worked without any
problems.

Btw, the controller in question is a Mylex Acceleraid 160 (170LP) ;)

In amy case, many thanx for your help! Bol'shoje spasibo :)

Hello,

Same issues here. I see some progress with 5.0RC2, it will now boot. I cannot however do a complete install. System locks and hangs at transfering base to / at different intervals.

We are getting closer.

Thank you.

: Just to add that I have exactly the same problem with same hardware
: (Mylex AcceleRAID 170).
:
: All goes fine with 4.3-release (currently running), and "no disk found"
: while attempting to upgrade with 4.7-release CD or 4.6.2-release
: floppies.
:
: Raid card seems to be recognized in dmesg, but no disk.

Sorry, accidentally closed.

Is this still a problem with 4.10?
