Description Josh Tolbert 2003-11-11 01:00:39 UTC
FreeBSD-5.1-CURRENT downloaded from current.freebsd.org will not
install from the CD on an on-board Promise FastTrak100 IDE RAID
controller. The motherboard is a Tyan Tiger LE. Two Western Digital
WD800JB IDE drives are cabled to the on-board FastTrack100, each
as primary master on its own channel.

The install begins fine. SMP is detected and both CPUs are utilized.
When asked which drive to partition, I pick ar0. From there I'm
presented with the standard fdisk screen. I choose either "F" or
"A" to use the entire drive. After moving to the disklabel editor,
I select "A" for auto, then "Q" to quit. I pick my distribution
sets (generally full sources and binaries but no X), select "yes"
for installing the ports tree, choose install from CD-ROM, pick my
CD-ROM drive and select "yes" at the "last chance" screen.

From there I'm presented with a screen that says, 'Unable to find
device node for /dev/ar0p1b in /dev! The creation of filesystems
will be aborted." I'm then dropped to a window that says installation
completed with some errors and returned to the initial /stand/sysinstall
 screen.

I tried starting an emergency shell and attempted to make the missing
devices by hand, but didn't see a way to make devices under 5.x.

How-To-Repeat: Try installing on a Promise FastTrack100 IDE RAID controller.

Looks like device ataraid was missing in GENERIC at that time.

Did you retry a later snapshot?
