  After installation of FreeBSD 5.1 I went into my user account and tried to su to root. The O/S reported back su:sorry.??  I am learning UNIX so I am not certain how to correct this problem. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I just did the recommended install...After installation I went into my root and did a pkg_add for xfree86 snd gnome..

To su from a user account to root, the user has to be in the wheel 
group.  See 
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/users-groups.html 
for adding a user to a group.
