Something seems to be seriously messed up with the handling/detection of optical disc drives in the 6.x series of FreeBSD (at least on intel PII/PIII type hardware configurations). I discovered this a few weeks ago when I tried to update a FreeBSD 5.4 system to 6.2R. This is a VIA chipset Slot-1 PIII/800 system, with two 40 pin ide connectors integrated on the motherboard. The system supports UATA133 mode with 80 wire cables. I have my 80 Gigabyte Samsung harddisk on primary-master and there is no device installed for primary-slave (an empty mobile rack is connected). Secondary-master is a Pioneer DVD-ROM (read only) and secondary-slave is an older 52x speed LG CD-ROM (also read only). I had absolutely no problems under my old FreeBSD 5.4, but when I tried to install 6.2R I had to realize that my DVD drive is not detected. I asked help in comp.unix.bsd.freebsd.misc but no reply arrived for weeks, so I am reporting this as a defect. Please see my included dmesg outputs from various systems and see how they detect the two optical drives! All these dmesg outputs were generated on the same day and on the same hardware using the default (GENERIC) minimal install, with the only difference being the disk or partition (slice) where the actual test system was installed and run from. * FreeBSD 4.11R identifies both the DVD-ROM and the CD-ROM fine. I was able to do the installation from the DVD-ROM as acd0. * FreeBSD 5.5R identifies both the DVD-ROM and the CD-ROM fine. I was able to do the installation from the DVD-ROM as acd0. * FreeBSD 6.2R could not identify the DVD-ROM, but it identified the CD-ROM as acd0. The install CD did boot from the DVD drive and the first few steps of the installation seem to work, up until I select installation media as CD/DVD. After newfs running on the disk, reading selected packages from source fails. Interestingly, it also fails if I move the installation CD from the DVD drive (which was not detected by the system) to the CD-ROM drive (which is supposed to be acd0). The test system had to be installed via FTP. * FreeBSD 6.1R and FreeBSD 6.0R both behave the same way as 6.2R. None of the 6.x series "see" the DVD-ROM drive, and they set the CD-ROM as acd0. Another system, an IBM Netfinity 5000 server with dual Slot-1 PIII/500 also suffers from this defect. Hence the assumption that it may be related to PII/PIII era systems. The Netfinity 5000 has only one integrated 40 pin IDE connector with an old-rubbish CD-ROM (read only), connected as master. The disks are all SCSI disks using the integrated Adaptec adapter. When I boot from the FreeBSD 6.2R install CD the CD-ROM drive does not show up in dmesg, no acd0, therefore installation from CD is not possible. Again, this also boots from the CD and gets to the main installation menu, but because no acd0 is detected installation from CD doesn't work. However, boot CDs of Linux, NetBSD and OpenBSD (4.1) nicely detect the CD-ROM, as well as FreeBSD 4.11R. Since this optical drive issue is working fine with 4.11R and 5.5R but not working with 6.0R, 6.1R and 6.2R, I assume that there is a little screw-up in the 6.x series. Re: kern/114213: [ata] optical drive not detected in the 6.x series of FreeBSD/i386 (regression) YES, it is still an issue with FreeBSD 6.3. I just tested 6.3 on the very same two computers (same hw config) my original report was based on. 1., My old PIII/800 desktop is a Slot-1 Soltek SL67-EV1/FV1 based system with 3x256MB SD-RAM, a Samsung 160GB hdd as primary master (no primary slave device), a Pioneer DVD reader as secondary master AND an LG CD-ROM reader as secondary slave. I booted off of the FreeBSD 6.3-RELEASE Install CD in the DVD reader. The system nicely boots up and the first sysinstall menu is displayed, but the DVD drive did not show up in dmesg (the LG CD-ROM drive did). This is exactly how 6.2R and 6.1R behaved on this hardware. When sysinstall showed up, I had to move the boot CD from the DVD reader to the CD-ROM drive and use the FIXIT shell, otherwise FIXIT didn't start either (Please insert CD ...). Just on the side note: due to this single machine I filed more PRs here already than I did alltogether before. I begin to believe that this old machine is programmed to generate FreeBSD incompatibility problems. :-) Just like with earlier 6.x Install CDs, FreeBSD boots up nicely up to the first sysinstall screen, but dmesg showed no CD-ROM drive, therefore neither installation nor FIXIT works. This also meant that I was unable to save a verbose dmesg using the CD. To generate the verbose dmesg below I synced the system src on the machine to RELENG_6 today and built world.
