I believe it would be useful to make some mention of the fact ping6 is required to ping IPv6 IP addresses in the IPv6 section of the handbook: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/books/handbook/network-ipv6.html Also might be worth mentioning nslookup by default will not search for AAAA records (yep I know its deprecated but bet its still used more often than any other DNS lookup tool). Id say these are worth mentioning as other OSs don´t necessarily behave the same way and this can be confusing for those who have to manage multiple OSs. IE solaris doesnt have a ping6 command, but Linux does etc.... thanks Andy.

There's a single binary: % ls -i /sbin/ping 3749407 /sbin/ping % ls -i /sbin/ping6 3749407 /sbin/ping6 % <https://docs.freebsd.org/en/books/handbook/advanced-networking/#_troubleshooting> refers to <https://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=ping&sektion=8&format=html> for ping(8). From <https://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=ping&sektion=8&manpath=FreeBSD#DESCRIPTION>: > … the specific IP versioncan be requested by -4 or -6 options, respectively. > For backwards-compatibility, ICMPv6 can also be selected by invoking > the binary as ping6. …
(In reply to Graham Perrin from comment #2) Noting they're still separate in 12.x. [pauamma@gadfly] ~% ls -li /sbin/ping* 657235 -r-sr-xr-x 1 root wheel 32552 Feb 9 2021 /sbin/ping 657237 -r-sr-xr-x 1 root wheel 41456 Feb 9 2021 /sbin/ping6
I'm gonna close this since ping supports IPv6. I put overcome by events, maybe not the best status.
