So, you know you changed sio to uart. And, its not like devices.hints isn't simply copied in-place when you upgrade/install. Nobody edits it. So, why do you update an UPDATING file to say 'oh, we removed sio and replaced it with uart' when you could have added cp devices.hints /boot/ and be done with it? Fix: update the devices.hints or.. emit a message to WARN us to update the devices.hints or make it easier to get into single-user on serial console in the absence of a working devices.hints. How-To-Repeat: take a 7.2 system, upgrade to 8.1 following buildworld/buildkernel/installkernel and then try and do lights-out boot single user
