I attempted to update a HP DL145 G3 server from 8.1p5 to 9.0p0 today and found that it hangs at "Root mount waiting for: usbus2". The issue was incurred after running: freebsd-update upgrade -r 9.0-RELEASE freebsd-update install shutdown -r now I tried various things to disable USB in the boot loader, like: set hint.usb.0.disabled=1 set hint.ehci.0.disabled=1 And also things like: set vfs.root.mountfrom=ufs:/dev/da0s1a set rootdev=disk0s1a but it seemed to ignore them and the result was the exact same each time. I've attached a working 8.1 /var/run/dmesg.boot along with the output of the 9.0 dmesg. Also, disabling ACPI causes 9.0 to panic and reboot. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright (c) 1992-2010 The FreeBSD Project. There aren't any hints to disable USB I'm afraid. Can you instead build a kernel that doesn't include 'device ehci' and see if that boots ok? Also, can you provide the output of 'pciconf -lv'? -- John Baldwin
Hi. I have a DL145 G3 with the same problem. The server is able to boot the = 8.3RC1 memstick image. When installing 8.3RC1 on the server and doing the freebsd-update to 9.0 = REL the DL145 G3 also will get stuck booting 9.0 REL (Root mount waiting = for: usbus2)=20 John, here is your requested output of pciconf -lv (from a running = 8.3RC1 memstick) Also: Would it make sense to try following ehci tunables in loader.conf = or are they unrelated ? hw.usb.ehci.lostintrbug hw.usb.ehci.iaadbug hw.usb.ehci.no_hs Kai Gallasch Fixit# pciconf -lv pcib1@pci0:0:1:0: class=3D0x060400 card=3D0x00000000 = chip=3D0x00361166 rev=3D0x00 hdr=3D0x01 class =3D bridge subclass =3D PCI-PCI hostb0@pci0:0:2:0: class=3D0x060000 card=3D0x02011166 = chip=3D0x02051166 rev=3D0x00 hdr=3D0x00 class =3D bridge subclass =3D HOST-PCI atapci1@pci0:0:2:1: class=3D0x01018a card=3D0x320b103c = chip=3D0x02141166 rev=3D0x00 hdr=3D0x00 class =3D mass storage subclass =3D ATA isab0@pci0:0:2:2: class=3D0x060100 card=3D0x02301166 = chip=3D0x02341166 rev=3D0x00 hdr=3D0x00 class =3D bridge subclass =3D PCI-ISA ohci0@pci0:0:3:0: class=3D0x0c0310 card=3D0x320c103c = chip=3D0x02231166 rev=3D0x01 hdr=3D0x00 class =3D serial bus subclass =3D USB ohci1@pci0:0:3:1: class=3D0x0c0310 card=3D0x320c103c = chip=3D0x02231166 rev=3D0x01 hdr=3D0x00 class =3D serial bus subclass =3D USB ehci0@pci0:0:3:2: class=3D0x0c0320 card=3D0x320d103c = chip=3D0x02231166 rev=3D0x01 hdr=3D0x00 class =3D serial bus subclass =3D USB vgapci0@pci0:0:4:0: class=3D0x030000 card=3D0x31fa103c = chip=3D0x0522102b rev=3D0x02 hdr=3D0x00 class =3D display subclass =3D VGA pcib3@pci0:0:6:0: class=3D0x060400 card=3D0x00000000 = chip=3D0x01401166 rev=3D0xa2 hdr=3D0x01 class =3D bridge subclass =3D PCI-PCI pcib4@pci0:0:7:0: class=3D0x060400 card=3D0x00000000 = chip=3D0x01421166 rev=3D0xa2 hdr=3D0x01 class =3D bridge subclass =3D PCI-PCI pcib5@pci0:0:8:0: class=3D0x060400 card=3D0x00000000 = chip=3D0x01441166 rev=3D0xa2 hdr=3D0x01 class =3D bridge subclass =3D PCI-PCI pcib6@pci0:0:9:0: class=3D0x060400 card=3D0x00000000 = chip=3D0x01421166 rev=3D0xa2 hdr=3D0x01 class =3D bridge subclass =3D PCI-PCI pcib7@pci0:0:10:0: class=3D0x060400 card=3D0x00000000 = chip=3D0x01441166 rev=3D0xa2 hdr=3D0x01 class =3D bridge subclass =3D PCI-PCI hostb1@pci0:0:24:0: class=3D0x060000 card=3D0x00000000 = chip=3D0x11001022 rev=3D0x00 hdr=3D0x00 class =3D bridge subclass =3D HOST-PCI hostb2@pci0:0:24:1: class=3D0x060000 card=3D0x00000000 = chip=3D0x11011022 rev=3D0x00 hdr=3D0x00 class =3D bridge subclass =3D HOST-PCI hostb3@pci0:0:24:2: class=3D0x060000 card=3D0x00000000 = chip=3D0x11021022 rev=3D0x00 hdr=3D0x00 class =3D bridge subclass =3D HOST-PCI hostb4@pci0:0:24:3: class=3D0x060000 card=3D0x00000000 = chip=3D0x11031022 rev=3D0x00 hdr=3D0x00 class =3D bridge subclass =3D HOST-PCI pcib2@pci0:1:13:0: class=3D0x060400 card=3D0xffeefea3 = chip=3D0x01041166 rev=3D0xc0 hdr=3D0x01 class =3D bridge subclass =3D PCI-PCI atapci0@pci0:1:14:0: class=3D0x010405 card=3D0x320b103c = chip=3D0x024a1166 rev=3D0x00 hdr=3D0x00 class =3D mass storage subclass =3D RAID mpt0@pci0:3:0:0: class=3D0x010000 card=3D0x30801000 = chip=3D0x00581000 rev=3D0x08 hdr=3D0x00 class =3D mass storage subclass =3D SCSI pcib8@pci0:7:0:0: class=3D0x060400 card=3D0x00000000 = chip=3D0x01031166 rev=3D0xb5 hdr=3D0x01 class =3D bridge subclass =3D PCI-PCI bge0@pci0:8:4:0: class=3D0x020000 card=3D0x703e103c = chip=3D0x167814e4 rev=3D0xa3 hdr=3D0x00 class =3D network subclass =3D ethernet bge1@pci0:8:4:1: class=3D0x020000 card=3D0x703e103c = chip=3D0x167814e4 rev=3D0xa3 hdr=3D0x00 class =3D network subclass =3D ethernet=
Booting the DL145 G3 with disabled ehci in GENERIC kernel changes = nothing, the boot process still times out with "mount waiting for: usbus1 usbus0" I've bee debugging this for 2-3 weeks now and now have decided to stick = with 8-STABLE on this particular server. My impression is, that the BIOS on the DL145 G3 is broken in combination = with FreeBSD9. On G6 is the same problem. On G7 boot process is ok. -- Best regerds Andrzej Chabierski
Just wanted to add: I succeeded in installing a 9-STABLE snapshot = (FreeBSD-9.0-RELENG_9-20120328) on my HP/Compaq DL385 G2 server. With 9.0 RELEASE it showed the same problem "Root mount waiting for: = usbus1 usbus0" as my old DL145 G3. If there was a regression in USB code in 9.0 RELEASE it seems to have = vanished by now in the 9-STABLE branch. I cannot confirm this for my DL145 G3 as this crappy hardware died = unexpectedly. So if anybody following this PR had the same USB trouble installing 9.0 = RELEASE would be so kind to retry the install with a few days old = 9-STABLE snapshot - just to confirm that the install is now possible = with 9-STABLE - that would be great! You can download fresh 9-STABLE snapshots from the allbsd ftp server[1]. Regards, Kai. [1] ftp://ftp.allbsd.org/pub/FreeBSD-snapshots/amd64-amd64/
