Description Harald Prettner 2012-07-05 13:50:02 UTC
Try to install 9.0-RELEASE amd64 on HP DL365 G5
Kernel is loading until usb2.0, then freezes.
This effect is discussed at

http://osdir.com/ml/freebsd-hardware/2012-03/msg00008.html

since March 2012

it seems to me that the machine tries to mount usbus devices for root

under 8.3-RELEASE these are identified correctly as

usbus0: 12Mbps Full Speed USB v1.0
usbus1: 12Mbps Full Speed USB v1.0
usbus2: 12Mbps Full Speed USB v1.0
usbus3: 480Mbps High Speed USB v2.0

How-To-Repeat: Try install 9.0-RELEASE amd64 on HP DL365 G5

I found out now that other people have the same problem on different
machines, but there is a workaround mentioned there that helps:

I just put

   kern.eventtimer.periodic=1
   kern.eventtimer.timer="LAPIC"

into "/etc/loader.conf" and the problem went away.

seems to be a bug in new code concerning the timer.

this seems to happen only on HP DL ..5 systems which are amd based.

I've had the same issue when using the older generation 5 HP servers but we recently upgraded to gen7 and gen8 servers and they run freebsd9.1 without any issues. I'm also sure, I've tested this on HP DL360G5 servers which are Intel based and they do the same thing too.
