Description M. 2012-11-01 00:40:00 UTC
The (default) AHCI/ATA_CAM or ata-ich drivers doesn't see any SATA-Disk or Optical drive
at the Controller.

The Machine is an DELL SC430. For more on the HArdware see the dmesg.

This got tested with the following Kinds of FreeBSD:
9.0 RELEASE i386
9.0 RELEASE amd64
9-STABLE i386
9-STABLE amd64

May be also 8.3-RELEASE will be affected?

The above uname is from a GENERIC Kernel reverted to the old ATA drivers, like described in
UPDATING entry 20110424for ATA/AHCI.

This behavior is valid for both configs, GENERIC with AHCI and ATA_CAM and the one without those options asa described in the UPDATING file.

The drives get properly detected by the Systems BIOS.
The Systems BIOS is already updated to the last Version.
The drives get detected and can get accessed by other Operating Systems.
the drives get detected and can get accessed by drive diagnostic tools under FreeDOS and unter Linux.

The entire machien is known to working very well. Until today the Machine was running under Linux debian. No Hardware Errors known.

If more testing/help is needed to figure the source of this error, please let me know.

Another sideeffect:
#glabel create swap ad0s1b
or resp.
# glabel create swap ada0s1b
is not persistend written to the disk, after a reboot the label is gone.
i tested this with exactly the same Disk on another System that is exactly the same way installed and configure but newer hardware.

Fix:

No idea - fix the source code for ?ata-ich? or according sources for SATA drive detection and recompile kernel - reboot - look what you get. :-)
How-To-Repeat: Install/boot with any provided (9.0 RELEASE onwards) CD/Memstick image and try to find any SATA Drive.
Comment 1 M. 2012-11-01 05:10:29 UTC
The RELEASE 8.3 is also affected. No SATA drives found.

With RELEASE 8.2 the disks get detected correctly.

i patched /usr/src/sys/dev/ata/chipsets/ata-intel.c.
I reverted to the definitions of RELEASE 8.2 and now i can access
all my drives.

i added the patch to this message. ata-intel.c is my version,
ata-intel.c.org the actual.

No compiling errors no Timeouts.
Peakperformance of 90MByte/S could getting reached without any errors.

I am not really sure what my changed meaning in deep, but it seems to work
correctly.

probably a kernel hacker can supervise that.

will be thankful for any feedback

many thanks.

Comment 4 M. 2012-11-01 17:49:24 UTC
After another night with digging the Internet
i found why the newer RELEASES will not find the SATA drives.

"The BIOS has programmed the chip into IDE mode, not AHCI mode. It seems
to have also set up the AHCI BAR, but the majority of chips with this ID
won't have been and so the ahci driver will fail with them. If the chip
was in AHCI mode, the device ID would automatically have changed to
0x27c1."

Just this Machine has no BIOS-Options to manage the ICH controller Mode.
It seems this caused the error, that the drives aren't visible for the
AHCI-driver.

So i ask, is there a solution/possibility to detect and change the working
mode of this Controller from the Operating System base/Kernel?

<<< can we do this on/with FreeBSD?
It seems that this didn't leaves the Controller in that state or that
the BIOS changes it back.

According to http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/io/i-o-controller-hub-7=
-datasheet.html

if i understand the documentation and ata-intel.c right,
this is a bug programmed into ata-intel.c.

cause of:

This document is intended for Original Equipment Manufacturers and BIOS ven=
dors
creating Intel=AE I/O Controller Hub 7 (ICH7) Family based products.
This document is
the datasheet for the following:
  =95 Intel=AE 82801GB ICH7 (ICH7)
  =95 Intel=AE 82801GR ICH7 RAID (ICH7R)
  =95 Intel=AE 82801GDH ICH7 Digital Home (ICH7DH)
  =95 Intel=AE 82801GBM ICH7 Mobile (ICH7-M)
  =95 Intel=AE 82801GHM ICH7 Mobile Digital Home (ICH7-M DH)
  =95 Intel=AE 82801GU ICH7-U Ultra Mobile (ICH7-U)

Note: Throughout this datasheet, the terms =93Desktop=94, =93Digital Home=
=94
=93Mobile=94, and =93Ultra
Mobile=94 refer to the following components, unless specifically
noted otherwise:
       =95 Desktop refers to the 82801GB ICH7, 82801GR ICH7R, and 82801GDH =
ICH7DH.
       =95 Digital Home refers to the 82801GDH ICH7DH and 82801GHM ICH7-M D=
H.
       =95 Mobile refers to the 82801GBM ICH7-M, and 82801GHM ICH7-M DH.
=95 Ultra Mobile refers to the 82801GU ICH7-U.

AHCI (Intel=AE ICH7R, ICH7DH, and Mobile Only)
The ICH7 provides hardware support for Advanced Host Controller
Interface (AHCI), a
new programming interface for SATA host controllers. Platforms
supporting AHCI may
take advantage of performance features such as no master/slave
designation for SATA
devices=97each device is treated as a master=97and hardware-assisted native=
 command
queuing. AHCI also provides usability enhancements such as Hot-Plug (Deskto=
p and
Mobile Only). AHCI requires appropriate software support (e.g., an
AHCI driver) and for
some features, hardware support in the SATA device or additional
platform hardware.

<<< 82801GB no AHCI capability there?????
Not all ICH7 Chipsets are capable of doing AHCI.
I am not sure if the chip reported ID's are right translated in
ata-intel.c oder pci devices.

Hi.

Enabling AHCI mode is quite messy process from the OS point of view, as
it requires to change device memory allocation, that is not supposed to
happen on that stage. I've decided to not do it. What we should do
instead is find why legacy mode on your board is not working correctly.
I guess problem is that your BIOS incorrectly setups device resource
responsible for SATA registers access. Please provide parts of `pciconf
-lvcb` output related to the controller and also full _verbose_ (press
respective button in boot menu) dmesg output.

Yes, i can understand the reasons why not to change the controller modes.
Better a stable behaviour than a flaky mem alloc mess. That why i love
and always prefer FreeBSD over any other OS.

The funny part for me is: the kernel can see the SATA Channels, just
not the disks/drives connected. So it looked for me the ata stuff has
stopped device scanning after it found the channels.

Many thanks for dealing with this old kind of s... stuff. :-)

The requested pciconf -lvcb, i leaved it at once. I wasn't really sure
which parts are not needed. i made the earlier tests with and without
all of the plugged PCI-Cards.
