In the handbook you find under "25.2.3.1.1 Custom Kernels with FreeBSD 8.X and Earlier" instruction to install / generate a GENERIC kernel as part of a major upgrade. In "25.2.3.2 Performing the Upgrade" is no link to the previous section "25.2.3.1.1". When you generate the GENERIC kernel following "25.2.3.1.1" and work through "25.2.3.2" the GENERIC kernel is removed as part of the "freebsd-update install" command. "nextboot -k GENERIC" will fail cause GENERIC is removed. Fix: GENERIC kernel must be build after the first "freebsd-update install" command. How-To-Repeat: Follow handbook "25.2.3.1.1" and then "25.2.3.2"
