I'm wondering if you could test out apel[1] (from Wanderlust repository), and see if it works for you, then maybe we can ask MANTANI-san (maintainer of editors/apel, added to this bug thread) to switch to that instead. editors/emacs23 is purged sometime ago, and the issue with editors/apel is fixed in bug 193270.
