release 10.1 beaglebone black rev C, the internal emmc does not appear to be enumerated on boot -- expected behavior is to see the device at /dev/mmcsd1. does not appear probed in the dmesg output at boot.

No, this is a specific problem of beaglebone.

The eMMC issue was fixed on -head (after r275950).

So it sounds like the problem affected 10.1 and is fixed already.
