This bug reported to a FreeBSD mailing list by Thomas Hoffmann in 2014 still exists.

With syscons, and the nvidia kernel module, vidcontrol -i mode lists a range of available video modes.

With vt, vidcontrol -i mode lists modes with zero in all fields (except for negative memory window sizes), and programs that make the same ioctl() call themselves in order to determine available video modes either complain about no video modes or crash with division by zero errors and suchlike.

Reporting zeroed or bogus modes has been fixed. The underlying issue (lack of mode changing support via vidcontrol) still exists, and vidcontrol -i mode now reports:

% vidcontrol -i mode
mode# flags type size font window linear buffer
