I am unable to synchronize my computers time using ntpdate(8) or ntpd(8). # sudo ntpdate 0.freebsd.pool.ntp.org 11 Dec 09:51:58 ntpdate[40755]: no server suitable for synchronization found And yet using the debug mode does not suggest anything is actually wrong: # sudo ntpdate -d 0.freebsd.pool.ntp.org 11 Dec 09:52:29 ntpdate[40757]: ntpdate 4.2.8p11-a (1) transmit(45.222.43.250) receive(45.222.43.250) transmit(196.10.52.58) receive(196.10.52.58) transmit(45.222.43.250) receive(45.222.43.250) transmit(196.10.52.58) receive(196.10.52.58) transmit(45.222.43.250) receive(45.222.43.250) transmit(196.10.52.58) receive(196.10.52.58) transmit(45.222.43.250) receive(45.222.43.250) transmit(196.10.52.58) receive(196.10.52.58) server 45.222.43.250, port 123 stratum 2, precision -23, leap 00, trust 000 refid [45.222.43.250], delay 0.04274, dispersion 0.00192 transmitted 4, in filter 4 reference time: dfb9ea38.cf51ef78 Tue, Dec 11 2018 9:48:08.809 originate timestamp: dfb9eb8e.e7ddd3d7 Tue, Dec 11 2018 9:53:50.905 transmit timestamp: dfb9eb46.a68c1b0e Tue, Dec 11 2018 9:52:38.650 filter delay: 0.04597 0.04274 0.04597 0.04797 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000 filter offset: 72.23768 72.23831 72.24198 72.24396 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 delay 0.04274, dispersion 0.00192 offset 72.238316 server 196.10.52.58, port 123 stratum 2, precision -24, leap 00, trust 000 refid [196.10.52.58], delay 0.04701, dispersion 0.00711 transmitted 4, in filter 4 reference time: dfb9e8b5.7b3dfb1b Tue, Dec 11 2018 9:41:41.481 originate timestamp: dfb9eb8f.1b55237d Tue, Dec 11 2018 9:53:51.106 transmit timestamp: dfb9eb46.d8834d5f Tue, Dec 11 2018 9:52:38.845 filter delay: 0.07347 0.04701 0.07225 0.05682 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000 filter offset: 72.25234 72.24034 72.25283 72.24537 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 delay 0.04701, dispersion 0.00711 offset 72.240342 11 Dec 09:52:38 ntpdate[40757]: step time server 45.222.43.250 offset 72.238316 sec
Apologies for the noise - it is an ISP issue that blocks packets to privilaged ports. Using `ntpdate -u 0.freebsd.pool.ntp.org` fixes the problem.
