I have successfully configured my sound system, and so far it is working, however, after some time it stops working. It is a Realtek ALC1220 chip that comes with a Gigabyte x570 Aorus Ultra. symptom: after some time the sound stops. syslogd goes to 100% CPU logging VLC logs. vlc can playback videos, however, I other video or audio playback software does not work neither
I have also seen lockups in the audio. When it happens, video playback tends to 'hang' (apparently can't write to the dsp device) and mplayer reports that audio is "locked up". reboot to fix (snd_hda is apparently compiled in, can't kldunload or otherwise reset audio system). Easiest way to trigger it: a) run virtualbox 5.2.34 with pulseaudio for sound on the VM (requires compiling it in) b) using a windows 7 VM, play anything that does multimedia [skippy audio, different problem most likely]. Let it run until audio stops working. After this, nothing else can access audio, either. This was happening with a 7/15/2019 kernel [forget which build number]. Sound has been working all along since I built it last year, and no other notable problems observed. newer pulseaudio version (13.something) didn't help, same problems noted. For now I'll disable any audio support from virtualbox that tries to use pulseaudio and see if there are any specific OSS-related problems.
I uninstalled vlc and now I am using mpv. Never had the issue since. However, it might be that just vlc triggers the bug of the operating system.
it happened again, this time in firefox-77.0.1_1,1 ... trying an online stream, cut off after around 2 seconds and now hanging with an extremely annoying noise. trying to playback another file from my local storage does not help to revert the sound system to a usable state.
found a workaround today: after killing the process occupying /dev/dsp a sysctl dev.hdac.1.polling=1 and sysctl dev.hdac.0.polling=1 made my soundsystem work again without a reboot!
