Description Graham Perrin 2021-07-09 20:47:18 UTC
No problem with a boot environment that preceded the update:

    n247798-f39dd6a9784-b

I created, activated then booted a new environment:

    n247798-f39dd6a9784-c

– ran `pkg upgrade`, rebooted, started Thunderbird, observed something wrong with fonts, started Firefox, observed a recurrence of symptoms that are associated with Mozilla bug 1695575. Maybe most significant:

* normally (with my preferences) a monospace font is used for
  the URL in the address bar

* after updating fontconfig from 2.13.93,1 to 2.13.93_1,1
  a different font was used for the URL in the address bar and
  (Mozilla bug 1695575) the user interface became 'too wide'.

Temporary workaround – package locked
=====================================

I rebooted n247798-f39dd6a9784-b, locked fontconfig to 2.13.93,1. Created, activated then booted a new environment:

    n247798-f39dd6a9784-d

– ran `pkg upgrade`, rebooted. Fonts appear OK in Thunderbird and Firefox.

Environment
===========

FreeBSD 14.0-CURRENT.

What other information will help?

Firefox bugged with fontconfig 2.13.93_1,1

The scroll bar is out of sight, and so on.

On the screen to the right: KDE Plasma system settings for fonts.

Firefox as it should appear

With the workaround – package locked before `pkg upgrade` – fonts appear correct:

* in the address bar
* in the menu bar
* at the head of the sidebar
* in the titles of tabs presented by the Tree Style Tab extension to Firefox.

Firefox bugged with 2.13.93,1

With the package still locked down to 2.13.93,1 I found Firefox bugged again after experimenting with changes to Plasma preferences for fonts.

Assuming that the toolbar font is relevant, in this shot it is:

Noto Sans 10 pt

Firefox bugged with 2.13.93,1 with Sans Serif 10 pt for the toolbar

More changes to fonts, Firefox remained bugged. In this shot, for the toolbar, my preference was:

Sans Serif 10 pt

Better after preferring Ubuntu Mono 10 pt for the toolbar

With a preference for Ubuntu Mono 10: Firefox appeared better, and remained so after I unlocked fontconfig and allowed an upgrade to 2.13.93_1,1.

Still, things are not as they should be; the title bars of windows do not use my preferred font.
