Additions
=========

Let's not omit the FreeBSD community in Reddit. Please add:

<https://www.reddit.com/r/freebsd/>

NNTP
====

Over the past year, only around twenty discussions have been posted to comp.unix.bsd.freebsd.announce (screenshot attached). NNTP is alive, but archaic.

Sidebar
=======

I reckon, the Community page sidebar can lose the 'Newsgroups' link. If people really want NNTP (usenet), they can find what's required in the Handbook.

Instead, the sidebar might be a good place for the link to /r/freebsd

Thanks

I don't see .announce in that screenshot if I'm reading it right, only .misc. That said, assuming .announce is a mirror of announce@, that only had 61 messages in 2021 per the archives, so I'm not sure a low count is an indication of disuse.

Thanks – and sorry, I omitted a few key points from the opening post. It was a quick opener to get the ball rolling.

Removal of 'Newsgroups' from the sidebar:

* not intended to entirely remove NNTP/Usenet from the Community page

* there's the link from the third paragraph, to the FreeBSD Handbook.

Neither of the two FreeBSD groups is disused (obsolete), it's just that NNTP is relatively archaic. Where a community has a complementary method of communication that's primarily web-based (with a good enough UX), the web naturally gains traction. Much more discussion in FreeBSD Forums than in comp.unix.bsd.freebsd.misc, and so on.

(I'm not dismissing NNTP altogether. I was a very frequent user around thirty years ago. It's simply much less attractive nowadays.)

----

As sidebars are typically for rapid web navigation – without scanning any length of text, so there's value in the Community sidebar linking to the more popular forms of interaction.

I no longer use Twitter, so I don't know which one of the three accounts is most popular (chatty), but I _guess_ that @freebsd is primary and should have a place in the sidebar.

----

Maybe something like this (alphabetical order for everything below 'Community'):

=================
Community
---------
BSD Now
Discord
Events
FreeBSD Forums
IRC
Mailing lists
Reddit
Twitter
Regional groups
YouTube
=================

* BSD Now <https://www.bsdnow.tv/> is broader than FreeBSD alone,
  however there's the community aspect – interviews etc. – I imagine
  that it's better placed under Community, than under Support

* FreeBSD Forums, two words, its proper name

* for sidebar purposes, the phrase 'Regional groups' might be truer than
  'User groups' – imagine being a newcomer to FreeBSD, clicking the
  phrase for the first time (without paying attention to the main
  body text).
