Xfce DE problem about xfce4-appfinder

I have installed FreeBSD 13.1.

The procedures are like these.

    pkg install xorg xfce xfce4-goodies lightdm lightdm-gtk-greeter ko-ibus-hangul noto-kr noto-basic noto-extra noto-emoji

    sysrc dbus_enable=YES

    sysrc hald_enable=YES

    sysrc lightdm_enable=YES

After reboot. (abbreviate setup process graphics drm(amdgpu, i915... etc), nvidia-driver )

Xfce DE starts well and I can run xfce4-appfinder. (from the second panel icon)

Now, it's the time xfce4-appfinder shut.

    First run xfce4-appfinder, No problem, not at all.

    xfce Logout

    Login xfce

    Run xfce4-appfinder. Then, there is no respond.

    Ctrl + Alt + F2 to console screen

    service dbus stop

    service lightdm stop

    service dbus start

    service lightdm start

    login to xfce(lightdm)

    click xfce4-appfinder but, no respond too.
    run xfce4-appfinder again, again
    you can see many many xfce4-appfinder process

same as no lightdm startx (.xinitrc (exec /usr/local/bin/startxfce4)).

same as slim logon manager.

What is the problem? Why xfce4-appfinder has run only well after first boot first run.

Other FreeBSD version 12.2 and 13.0 have the problem too.

Hi,

I'm unable to reproduce the issue here, so this could be difficult to diagnose.

Some more information is required. I need to ask questions and have you make tests. I don't know what the problem could be, so maybe some things I ask are not really useful but I need to guess at present and gather some evidence.

I guess from your message that you're using quarterly packages, is this correct?

Have you tried launching xfce4-appfinder from a terminal emulator? Is there any output when it fails to run?

have you taken a look at log files? let's start with basic things. Can you find anything useful in any of the following logs?

/var/log/messages
~/.xsession-errors

Also, do you have made any kind of customization to the xfce/Xorg startup scripts?

Nothing else comes to mind right now.

I finally reproduce the problem.

1. Install FreeBSD

2. pkg update (using quarterly packages)

3. pkg install xorg xfce xfce4-goodies

4. pkg install ko-ibus-hangul noto-kr

5. rc.conf
   $ cat /etc/rc.conf
sendmail_enable="NONE"
hostname="freebsd.nwrocks.local"
ifconfig_em0="DHCP"
sshd_enable="YES"
# Set dumpdev to "AUTO" to enable crash dumps, "NO" to disable
dumpdev="AUTO"
dbus_enable="YES"
hald_enable="YES"
vboxguest_enable="YES"
vboxservice_enable="YES"

6. .xinitrc
   exec /usr/local/bin/startxfce4

7. ime, font setup
   pkg install ko-ibus-hagul noto-kr

8. startx

9. xfce4-appfinder won't execute.
   There is no error messages.

10. run app from panel
    run app from xfce menu
    run from console
    same as the 2. there are many xfce4-appfinder processes

after several tests, I found the problem has occured when IME was set only hangul up.

even now, simply reproduce by below condition is matched.

1. you must ibus installed.

2. open ibus preferences

3. click Input method tab

4. When English only
   -> there is no problem.

5. Remove English -English(US)
6. Add click
   type in the text as 'hangul'
   select Korean
   select Hangul
   click 'Add'

7. currently xfce4-appfinder have no problem.

8. Logout

9. Login

10. xfce4-appfinder click
11. You can feel it's not running
    another try N times.

12. suddenly pop xfce4-finder up.

13. In this time, open terminal

14. you can see several xfce4-appfinder processes list
    The processes count are matched before you tried
    ps ux | grep xfce4-appfinder

Hi,

I'll try to reproduce the issue later, time allowing and see what I can find out.

At first glance this looks like a locale issue, so most probably an upstream bug caused by specific locale settings. This is compounded by the presence of many hanging processes. But I'm just guessing.

I have a question though, you wrote:

> after several tests, I found the problem has occured when IME was set only hangul up.

I really cannot parse that, I don;t understand what you mea:

What is "IME"? and what do you mean by "IME was set only hangul up"? I really can't make out the meaning of that.

Please note that I don't use locale settings much, I use FreeBSD in English, standard C locale even if I'm Italian, with the only exception of the email client, so I could be missing out on some instrument or jargon regarding locale settings. So please explain to me the details too, since I could be missing them.

BTW did you take a look at ~/.xsession-errors and /var/log/messages? Anything suspicious there?
Comment 9 luscent@gmail.com 2022-06-22 12:12:26 UTC
First of all, thank you for your reply.
I really appreciate that.

What I've called IME is pretty normal on windows. At the moment, I can't say the correct word.
You can simply think of it like ibus, fcitx etc, as a language input tool such as it can help type strings in the textbox with other locales.

When I setup *nix, I always install the ibus package (or language ). because asian language inputs are needed.

As for now, there are no ~/.xsession-errors and nothing suspicious on /var/log/messages.

Like you said I was also thinking it was a locale problem. Fortunately, I didn't notice the locale problem you mentioned and English speakers don't use ibus. As you said, I thought of removing the locale-related settings, and when I did, there was no problem. Try installing en-ibus-hangul. And if you see an ibus related icon in the upper right corner of xfce, you're done. It will be obvious that ibus is the one that will make an impact.

Sorry for being a non-English speaking user. I was also very frustrated. Fortunately, I used Google Translate to write the words smoothly.

I have somewhat reproduced the issue, at least I have seen xfce4-appfinder not start.

It does look like it is caused by the presence of ibus, but I have no clue why.

One interesting thing is that if I launch xfce4-appfinder with truss to try to understand where it hangs, it does not hang anymore.

Usually this behavior indicates there is a timing issue, some kind of resource deadlock.

I don't know where the issue is or what could be a solution though, also not knowing anything about how ibus of xfce4-appfinder work internally. In fact I never use any of those, so I don't even know how to use them.

I will anyway post an issue upstream about this, but since I'm not using the related software, I'd rather have you (the OP) chime in to confirm the issue and eventually help test patches.

This problem only occurs on FreeBSD.

I have been using various linux for a long time. Arch, Manjaro, Debian, Ubuntu, CentOS, Fedora. But this problem only occurs on FreeBSD using Xfce. It does not occur in Linux-like Distro using other Xfce.

In addition to the problem that occurs when the user list is not visible when logging in due to a gdm problem while using only Gnome in FreeBSD, various bugs keep occurring as the user recently changed to Gnome 40 (gnome settings -> Color or Power tab, and always core dump Problem, ) I moved to Xfce because it was annoying, but the same problem occurred.

Until recently, after more than 100 attempts, this phenomenon could be reproduced and a bug was reported.
It's because I don't want to use FreeBSD only in a VM environment, so I hope this bug gets resolved.

After reproducing the last bug, I tried to install it without ibus while re-installing it on the actual PC, but as a habit, I installed it as follows.

pkg install xorg xfce xfce4-goodies lightdm lightdm-gtk-greeter en-ibus-hangul noto-basic noto-extra noto-emoji noto-kr xfc4-xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin

Should I say it's funny? This time there is no problem and it is working normally.
What is the problem, this problem is strange.

(In reply to luscent@gmail.com from comment #13)

The problem strongly looks like a race condition. Two (or more) async events need to happen in a specific order for things to work correctly. If they happen in a different order things lock up.

But being asynchronous events they can happen in any order, so it's a chance thing.

It's also possible that running in a VM makes the wrong order more probable for some reason than on real hardware. It is also very common in this kind of situation for the broken behaviour to not show up when running in a debugger or tracing tool (like truss(1)), due to the timing changes such tools impose.

This is a difficult kind of bug to diagnose.

Hi,

I've tried to help upstream reproduce the issue, but it is not happening for them.

My ability to guide them with this issue is limited due to me not using localization and knowing very little about ibus, and absolutely nothing about Korean language.

So if you want to have this issue acted upon, I need to ask you to join the discussion upstream at: https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-appfinder/-/issues/61

Specifically, upstream needs help on how to reproduce the issue in a VirtualBox machine running FreeBSD. If he can get there he is willing to try to further debug and try to produce a patch.
